Minimum car insurance requirements for liability and full coverage in Texas

All Texas drivers must have minimum liability coverage. Many drivers will want to opt for
full coverage
as well, which will cover damage to your own vehicle.

Cheapest minimum liability coverage in Texas

Texas drivers need to meet the state's minimum liability coverage limits in order to legally hit the road.
In Texas, these are the state’s minimum liability requirements:
  • Bodily injury liability: $30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident
  • Property damage liability: $25,000 per accident
These liability limits are sometimes referred to as 30/60/25 coverage.
Take a look at what other Texas drivers are paying for minimum liability car insurance policies they found through Jerry.

Do you need more than the minimum liability insurance coverage in Texas?

Most Texas drivers will want liability limits higher than the state’s 30/60/25 minimum requirement.
If you were found at fault for a severe accident, costs for injuries and property damage could easily exceed these limits. If someone else’s vehicle was totaled, it’s possible it could cost more than $40,000 to replace that alone.
For better financial protection, consider choosing higher liability limits, such as 50/100/50 or 100/300/100 liability coverage—even if you decide to forego full coverage.
Lower my car insurance too!

Cheapest full coverage auto insurance quotes in Texas

Liability insurance will cover others’ injuries and property damage, but it won’t pay for damage to your own vehicle—you’ll need full coverage for that.
Full coverage, which includes
comprehensive
and
collision coverage
, can pay to repair or replace your own car:
  • Collision coverage: Applies to damage that happens after an accident
  • Comprehensive coverage: Applies to damage that happens after a range of other events, like theft, hail, or hitting an animal
If you have a loan on the car: Car loan lenders commonly require you to keep full coverage on your car insurance policy.

Average rates for minimum liability coverage and full coverage car insurance in Texas

In working with thousands of Texas car insurance policyholders, Jerry has found that the average cost of minimum liability coverage is $146 per month or $1,751 per year. The average cost for full coverage insurance in Texas is $304 per month or$3,650 per year.
Although referring to average insurance rates can be helpful as you start the car insurance shopping process, note that your own car insurance costs will depend on many factors that are specific to you as an individual, such as:
  • Your vehicle type
  • Your insurance claims history
  • Your age, gender, and other demographics
  • The amount and types of coverage you choose
Based on our experience working with drivers in Texas, we've observed that insurance premiums for minimum liability coverage start at around $40 per month, while full coverage policies start at about $70 per month. Based on each driver’s situation, the costs can go up to several hundred dollars per month.

Other types of Texas auto insurance

In addition to collision and comprehensive coverage, you can also add other coverage types to your policy in Texas, such as:
If you have a car loan:
Gap insurance
can cover the remaining balance on your car loan if your vehicle is totaled or stolen and the value is less than what you still owe.

Car insurance premium by rating factors

Insurance companies in Texas consider many rating factors when calculating your car insurance premium:
  • Your driving record and claims history: Insurance providers will charge higher rates for drivers with accidents or violations.
  • Where you keep your car: Rates are likely higher if you live in a highly populated city. Even in the same city, rates can vary between zip codes.
  • Your credit score: Drivers with higher credit scores may find it easier to secure lower rates.
  • The kind of car you drive: Collision and comprehensive coverage are more expensive for luxury, high-performance, and sports cars.

How Do Different Factors Impact Your Car Insurance Costs in Texas?

icon
Allowed (with applicable limitations): Gender, age, driving experience, credit history, education, occupation, employment status, marital status, zip code, insurance history
icon
Prohibited (or effectively prohibited): Texas currently does not disallow any common insurance rating factors when calculating insurance premiums.

FAQ

Texas is an at-fault state: What this means is that drivers who are found at fault for an accident will be financially responsible for resulting injuries and property damage.
Unlike in no-fault states, Texas drivers aren’t legally required to purchase no-fault insurance like personal injury protection (PIP)—but adding it to your policy is still a good idea. Regardless of fault, PIP can help supplement your health insurance if you’re injured in an accident or cover lost wages.
The bottom line: Texas car insurance policies automatically include PIP, but the coverage isn’t legally required and drivers can choose to opt out. Still, it’s a good idea to keep this coverage, especially for drivers who don’t have health insurance.

How to find cheap Texas car insurance based on your insurance history

When shopping for
car insurance quotes
, your insurance history—i.e., whether or not you’re currently insured—will influence what you get for rates.
Maintaining continuous car insurance coverage over a long period of time makes it easier to find lower car insurance costs. On the flip side,
car insurance coverage lapses
can result in higher rates.
On-time payments are essential for avoiding early
policy cancellation
and a lapse in coverage. That’s why Jerry can send customers payment reminders and late payment warnings to help keep your coverage in good standing.
Lapse or no lapse, here are rates drivers with varying insurance statuses have found while shopping with Jerry.

How to find cheap Texas car insurance with a low credit score

In Texas, drivers with poor credit ratings will often see higher insurance costs. This is largely because policyholders with poor credit are statistically more likely to file insurance claims.
Meanwhile, policyholders with good credit should have an easier time finding lower premiums.
According to our data, the average car insurance rate for the highest credit bracket (over 750) is almost 20% lower than the average cost for people with lower credit scores (under 550).

Texas’ car insurance laws
, drivers must carry at least $30,000 in liability coverage for each injured person, up to a total of $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage per accident. This basic coverage is called 30/60/25.
In Texas, full coverage car insurance includes the state’s mandatory minimum 30/60/25 liability coverage, collision coverage, and comprehensive coverage.
In Texas, liability car insurance covers medical payments and car repair costs for the other driver if you are involved in an at-fault accident. Liability coverage will not cover your medical bills or car repair expenses if you are found at-fault for an accident.
You will need your insurance card, proof of vehicle inspection, and proof of car ownership to register a car in Texas.
You can get car insurance without a license in Texas, but you won’t be able to name yourself as the primary driver without a license. To purchase car insurance, someone with a valid Texas driver's license will need to be the named primary driver on the policy.
To legally drive on Texas roads, drivers must have car insurance. You will be fined if you are caught driving without insurance in Texas.
It is recommended that drivers get car insurance
before buying a car
or before they begin driving someone else’s vehicle.
If you get pulled over by police and you can’t show proof of insurance, your vehicle may be
towed
at your own expense, and you may also receive a citation
According to Texas law, most policies cover you, your family, and people driving your car as long as they have your permission.
If you let someone else drive your car and they get in an accident, your insurance company would likely be responsible for paying the claim, depending on the coverages in your policy.
But it can get nuanced when someone involved in an accident is excluded from coverage, or when you, the person borrowing your car, and the person at fault in the accident all carry insurance policies.
Your standard car insurance policy will typically cover you when you travel in all 50 states and Canada.
You generally should not have out-of-state car insurance if you live in Texas, but there are some exceptions to this—for example, if you are a resident of two states, or you are a member of the military stationed in another state.
All auto policies in Texas include PIP coverage, but you can sign a waiver to decline this coverage.
Insurance companies are required to offer PIP in Texas, but not medical payment (MedPay) coverage. Both coverages pay regardless of who is at fault in an accident. Drivers can buy one or the other.
There are some key differences between PIP and MedPay: PIP will cover lost wages that MedPay does not cover. In addition, PIP has no payback provision, while MedPay coverage has a subrogation clause, which requires repayment when collecting from a third party.
