Comprehensive Allstate Car Insurance Review

Although it’s one of the biggest insurers in the nation, Allstate ranked below average in the first-hand reviews analyzed by
Jerry
’s research team in 2023.
Jerry
experts conducted one of the nation's most extensive reviews to collect car insurance information over 18 months. We surveyed over 18,000 policyholders from all 50 states, asking them about their experience with their insurance company’s customer service, renewal process, claims handling, and more.
Here’s a snapshot of the numbers Allstate earned in five categories:

So, is Allstate a good insurance company?

Allstate has a long list of products and tools, but policyholders took umbrage with its prices.
We collected and analyzed over 900 real customer reviews from Allstate. Of those reviews, we found that 75% were overwhelmingly positive, while only 7.5% were negative.
For comparison, the 120+ auto insurance companies we surveyed averaged 64% positive reviews to 18.54% negative reviews. Nevertheless, many customers felt Allstate’s car insurance rates could be better.
The good: The customers we surveyed rated Allstate slightly above average when it came to processing claims, renewing policies, and buying coverage.
  • Customer service is quick and helpful
  • Allstate’s mobile app is easy to use
  • Claims are processed promptly
On the other hand: Allstate policy customers found its insurance rates too expensive. Many customers reported a large increase in their insurance premiums around renewal time.
We asked policyholders to rate Allstate on its cost, customer service, claims process, purchase, renewal, and overall satisfaction.

  • Anyone who enjoys great customer service
Keep in mind: Allstate’s car insurance policies cost more than average for regular drivers, so non-standard drivers probably won’t find great rates.

The company’s list of products includes:
  • Auto insurance
  • Boat insurance
  • Mexico car insurance
  • Motorcycle insurance
  • Roadside assistance
  • RV insurance
  • Condo insurance
  • Homeowners insurance
  • Renters insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Business insurance

Will Allstate raise your rates?

Yes. As a rule, you’ll pay a little more at Allstate (and every other company) each time
your car insurance renews
Allstate may increase your rates if:
  • The inflation rate rises
  • You add a new driver to your policy
  • You add a new vehicle to your policy
  • You change your address
  • You’re involved in a car accident
  • You receive a traffic ticket
Our survey results say that 44% of drivers who mentioned renewal chose to continue their policies with Allstate.
Remember: Even if there are no changes to your driver profile, it’s normal for your insurance rates to fluctuate over time. Providers often make changes to the way they price their policies.

Does Allstate resolve claims fast?

Allstate advises that its representatives will provide an estimate for how long a claim will take, but some customers reported the claims department was unresponsive.
Ideally, a provider should assign an adjuster to your case soon after you
file a car insurance claim
. The adjuster’s job is to investigate the claim, assess any injuries or damages, and decide whether to approve or deny it based on the relevant policy terms and limits. A swift and efficient claims process helps to reduce the strain on consumers’ finances and emotions.
About 50% of Allstate customers shared what it was like to file a claim with the company, rating it 3.9/5 for efficiency and overall satisfaction. In the main, consumers were split on satisfaction regarding Allstate’s claims process.
The average claims satisfaction index for every company we surveyed in the country is only 3.54. Allstate ranks 10th overall among 20 competitors, so it’s doing better than half of them.

Allstate coverage options

The best insurance policy is one tailored to suit your needs and your
state’s insurance requirements
. Here are the most common
types of car insurance
, add-ons, and extra coverage options you can find with Allstate:
  • Classic car insurance:
Classic car insurance recognizes that the value of a well-preserved vintage ride exceeds its peers, and so should any insurance payout.
  • Collision coverage:
Collision insurance pays to repair your car after an impact with another vehicle or object, whether it’s your fault or not.
  • Comprehensive coverage:
Fire, weather, vandalism, or theft won’t phase you if you have comprehensive protection. Combine it with collision insurance for
    full-coverage
    protection.
  • Gap insurance:
Gap insurance pays any difference between your insurance payout and your lease or loan, leaving you free of debt.
  • Liability insurance
: Covering the cost of any damages you cause behind the wheel, liability insurance is mandatory in most states. There are usually separate minimum car insurance coverage limits required for
    Bodily Injury Liability (BIL)
    and
    Property Damage Liability (PDL)
    .
  • Medical payments (MedPay):
As the name suggests, MedPay covers you and your passengers’ medical treatments after an accident.
  • Milewise: Milewise is Allstate’s
    pay-as-you-go
program that helps low-mileage drivers save money. It’s available in 21 states.
  • New car replacement coverage:
You can get an identical or equivalent replacement following a total loss, regardless of how much your old car has depreciated.
  • Non-owner insurance:
If you don’t own a car, a non-owner policy acts as supplemental liability coverage whenever you drive a borrowed or rental car.
  • Personal injury protection (PIP):
A no-fault insurance policy covering your and your passengers’ hospital bills, lost wages, and related medical costs after a car accident.
  • Personal umbrella policy (PUP): PUP is an add-on that offers between $1 million to $5 million of coverage for personal injury lawsuits that exceed your regular policy limits.
  • Rental reimbursement:
You can rent a car or take a taxi and get reimbursed if your car is in the shop following an insurance claim.
  • Ride for hire: Allstate’s
    rideshare insurance
covers your vehicle when you use it for business purposes, like driving for Uber or Lyft.
  • Roadside assistance:
Allstate offers 24/7 roadside assistance, including towing, winching, jumpstarts, battery charges, flat tire changes, and locksmith services.
  • SR-22 insurance:
Allstate will file an SR-22 (or FR-44) on your behalf if you need it.

    .
  • Allstate.com: You can make payments, view documents, and change your coverage by logging into the Allstate website.
  • By mail: If you prefer the old-fashioned route, you can send payments and paperwork to Allstate’s department in

FAQs

According to the NAIC (the National Association of Insurance Commissioners), the top four auto insurance companies in the US are State Farm, GEICO, Progressive, and Allstate. Cumulatively, these four write over half the policies sold in the country.
There’s no single best car insurance company in the US for everyone. Every driver is different and so is the best car insurance company for their situation—you have to compare quotes and coverage to find your number one!
Allstate’s size gives it an edge when it comes to financial stability, insurance product selection, discounts, tools, and customer service. Its A+ rating of financial strength allows it to provide 24/7 customer service and coordinate tens of thousands of local agents in every state from California to Washington.
In Jerry’s nationwide shopping survey, customers rated Progressive’s policy costs one whole point higher than Allstate’s. If cheap is best for you (especially if you’re a high-risk driver), check out our Progressive car insurance review.

Insurance research: We analyzed over 25 million car insurance quotes; conducted the largest insurance shopping survey (over 18,000 customers surveyed and 120 carriers reviewed in the past 18 months). We surveyed insurance policyholders for their experience with their insurers in the following areas: (1) insurance cost (2) customer service (3) insurance buying experience (4) insurance renewal experience (5) claim experience. In addition, we asked people what they like about their insurers and what areas in which their insurers could improve. The driver characteristics used in calculating average rates for auto insurance include: single driver, single car, currently insured, clean driving record.  For the quotes and sold policies included in this article, please note that personal information has been hidden.
