Comprehensive Mercury Car Insurance Review

Mercury is a smaller auto insurance provider that offers cheap rates for most drivers in a handful of states—but
Jerry's
group of researchers found that for car insurance in 2023, it was ranked in the middle of the pack.
Mercury received the following reviews from actual policyholders:

So, is Mercury a good insurance company?

Mercury is, on the whole, a decent insurance company.
We looked at over 300 verified customer reviews for Mercury and found that 87% had a positive opinion of the service they received while only 5.7% had a negative one.
Considering the national average of only 64% positive reviews and 18.54% bad reviews, it's easy to see why Mercury did well on our survey.
The positive: Mercury's affordable rates for people of all demographics and driving records is one of the reasons people choose this insurer. Mercury customers have also commended the following features:
  • Mechanical breakdown coverage
  • Rideshare insurance available
  • Easy-to-use and well-rated mobile app
However, the lack of options to customize Mercury auto policies was a common complaint from customers who left negative reviews.
We asked policyholders to rate Mercury on their affordability, claims experience, customer service, and renewal process.

But as a smaller-tier insurance provider, Mercury is only available in the following 11 states:

home insurance
, as well as
renters insurance
. They also provide a few add-on coverages, like
rental car coverage
and roadside assistance.

Is Mercury car insurance expensive?

Affordable car insurance is Mercury’s biggest claim, but is that claim legit? From our studies, yes!
Mercury's costs were brought up in 28% of reviews. 82% of reviews were positive in this regard, and only 13.4% were negative. The general consensus among reviewers seems to be that Mercury's auto insurance rates are overall rather affordable.
Mercury ranked 29th in our study of customer satisfaction with insurance premiums in part because of its smaller size and more limited offerings. Their average rating of 2.6 out of 5 stars is lower than the national average of 3.81.
Keep in mind that Mercury's rates won't be the same for everyone because different drivers present different risks. When determining your premium, Mercury takes the following into account, as do most insurance companies:
Even though insurance companies in every state have the right to use their own rating factors when determining premium costs, there is still a wide range of rates across the country. We see the following trends when we look at the Mercury data gathered:

Will Mercury raise your rates?

Every time you
renew your policy
, Mercury, like any other insurance provider, can raise your rates.
For the following reasons, Mercury may choose to raise your premium:
  • New tickets, violations, or accidents
  • New address
  • New driver on the policy
  • New vehicle on the policy
  • Inflation
64% of the drivers surveyed by Jerry renewed their Mercury insurance. Don't be surprised if your insurance premium changes over time; this can occur regardless of any modifications to your driving record or other factors.

Does Mercury resolve claims fast?

Mercury, like many other insurance providers, has a 30-day average for claims resolution. However, the length of time it takes to resolve your auto insurance claim depends on the details of your specific case.
The insurance company will conduct an investigation, evaluate the losses or injuries, and establish liability and coverage limits in order to swiftly settle or deny the claim. If this deadline is met, claims can be processed quickly and efficiently, relieving stress for policyholders.
According to our poll, roughly 64% of all Mercury policyholders have filed a claim. Customers were dissatisfied with Mercury's claims service, giving it only 2 stars out of 5.
Mercury scored lower than the industry average of 3.54/5. Based on the claims procedure comments of their verified clients, we ranked Mercury 13th when compared to other businesses of the same size.

Mercury car insurance discounts

Mercury offers a variety of
discounts
that can help you save money on your annual costs.
If a driver is eligible for discounts, such as those for safe driving, low mileage, and policy bundling, they may be able to significantly lower their monthly premium. Saving money on car insurance is as easy as installing safety features and switching to a policy that takes your driving record into account.
Mercury provides the following discounts:
  • Anti-theft feature discount: Mercury provides discounts to drivers who install anti-theft devices in their vehicles.
  • Autopay discount: Setting up automatic payments for your car insurance bill each month could earn you immediate savings.
  • E-signature discount: Any customers who sign their insurance documents using an electronic signature are eligible for a discount.
  • Good driver discount
: If you’ve gone a certain amount of time without an accident or violation, you could earn a nice discount on your premium.
  • Good student discount
: Depending on the state, students who get a B average, are on the dean’s list, or are in the top 20th percentile could save on their coverage.
  • Multi-car discount: Insuring more than one car with Mercury could lead to lower costs.
  • Multi-policy discount
: Using Mercury for more than one insurance product—like renters or homeowners insurance— could cut down your coverage costs.
  • Pay-in-full discount: If you can pay your entire coverage term in one lump sum, Mercury will reward you with savings.

Mercury coverage options

Although all insurers are required by law to provide at least the
minimum liability coverage
required in your state, Mercury also provides several optional extras.
Mercury offers these types of coverage:
Liability car insurance
: Depending on your state, you may need to purchase either
bodily injury liability
or
property damage liability
(or both!) to cover claims for other drivers if you cause an accident.
Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage
: Many states mandate this coverage to pay for your bills if you’re in an accident with a driver who lacks sufficient liability coverage.
Collision insurance:
If you’re involved in a collision with another car or object, or an accident like a rollover, this coverage helps pay for the damage.
Comprehensive insurance:
This coverage pays for damages caused by events other than collisions like theft, vandalism, an animal, or severe weather.
Rideshare insurance
: This will extend your insurance policy to cover your car when you’re driving for a rideshare service for Lyft or Uber.
Roadside assistance: Also called
towing and labor coverage
, Mercury covers services like towing, locksmiths, tire repair, tire replacement, and battery jumpstarts.
Rental car insurance
: If your car is being repaired after an accident, this coverage provides you a reimbursement of $30 to $100 a day.

Mercury’s additional tools and services

Mercury offers more than just auto insurance. You could use Mercury for up to seven different types of coverage, including the following:
  • Business auto insurance
  • Business insurance
  • Homeowners insurance
  • Renters insurance
  • Condo insurance
  • Landlord insurance
It's important to remember that these optional extras aren't always available, depending on factors like where you live and the specifics of your chosen policy. Check out the Mercury website or give them a call to learn more about the various coverage options available in your area.

will increase your rates—some more than others. If you get labeled as a
high-risk driver
, you can expect your rates to escalate drastically.
Even minor traffic offenses, like speeding, could lead to a rate increase. Some actual drivers who spoke with Jerry about their Mercury experiences are quoted below.
