Will State Auto raise your rates?

As with most insurance providers, State Auto can only raise your insurance rates when your policy is
up for renewal
Some reasons your rate might increase include:
  • New address
  • New vehicle on policy
  • Additional drivers on policy
  • Recent or new accidents
  • Recent traffic violations or tickets
  • Inflation
According to the results from our survey, over half of State Auto policyholders chose to renew. But it’s important to remember that insurance providers often change the way they structure their pricing, and as a result, fluctuation can be expected, even though there may be no changes to your driving profile.

Does State Auto resolve claims fast?

While State Auto doesn’t explicitly state how long it will take to complete a
car insurance claim
, they do provide step-by-step assistance to help customers through the claims process.
State Auto insurance policyholders can
submit a claim
through the company website by providing the required information. Once a claim is filed, State Auto will gather and review the details, determine the damage done to your vehicle, and issue a repair payment if necessary.
Our survey results show that over half of our respondents have filed a claim with State Auto. These same customers rated State Auto’s claims process a 3.42/5, which is just slightly below the national average of 3.54. This tells us that despite the easy to follow online guide, some customers were dissatisfied with State Auto’s claims process and/or resolution times.

  • Paid in full
: State Auto offers discounts to drivers who pay their entire policy in full.
  • Driver training
: Drivers under the age of 21 get discounts for attending drivers education courses. For those in South Carolina, the age limit extends to 25.

State Auto coverage options

Car insurance coverage limits and options will change depending on your driver needs and state regulations. Note that as of 2023, State Auto will no longer be offering new auto insurance or homeowner policies, and most policies will transition to Safeco.
As such, these are some of State Auto’s
common types of car insurance
offerings for existing customers:
Liability insurance
: Provides
bodily injury liability
and
property damage liability
coverage if the policyholder is at-fault in an accident.
Medical payments (MedPay)
: Provides coverage for all medical bills for the driver and others in the vehicle during an accident. This policy is grouped with
personal injury protection

Collision coverage
: Covers damage sustained in an accident.
Other than collision coverage: A type of
comprehensive coverage
that covers damage done to your vehicle caused by theft, vandalism, strong weather conditions, and more.
Umbrella insurance: Coverage expands to personal property including auto and homeowner insurance, managing any legal charges, damages, or bodily injuries you may sustain.
Full glass safety coverage: Glass coverage that helps to pay the damage repair costs to your windshield caused by events other than accidents (storms, falling objects, etc.)
Accident forgiveness and minor violation: Provides support in fender benders, rolling through a stop sign, or other moving violations.
Transportation network (ridesharing) coverage: Additional coverage for rideshare drivers.
Roadside assistance
: Provides 24/7 towing services for broken down vehicles.
Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts coverage: Vehicle models under 10 years old can be fixed using OEM parts, and State Auto will cover the cost. This option, however, is not available under State Auto’s Standard policy.
Auto replacement cost (total loss plus): Available only for cars in 2 model years of the policy date. Provides coverage for vehicles that are considered a total loss after an accident for an added premium.

State Auto’s additional tools and services

Alongside multiple coverage options, add-ons, and discounts, State Auto also offers numerous tools and services to help enhance the customer experience. Here are some of their most discussed features:
  • State Auto Safety 360®: This feature was mentioned earlier, but in addition to giving drivers discounts, State Auto Safety 360® is a telematics tool that reports your driving history via the mobile app and a paired tag.
  • AutoXtended® coverage endorsement: This additional coverage option comes in two variations—AutoXtended Plus and AutoXtended Premier—and protects your possessions within your vehicle. Note that this option is not available under State Auto’s Standard policy.

that allows customers to review their policy, make a payment, submit/manage/track a claim, and get information on current coverage options.
