How Much is Car Insurance in Maine?

But while you can’t always control where you live, you can get cheap car insurance by choosing an insurance policy that has the best rates for your needs. What’s Your Rate?

But how do you know what policy is right for you in Maine? The truth is that insurance companies take many different factors into account when coming up with your quote. They create a profile based not only on where you live in Maine, but also on your credit score, marital status, the kind of car you own, and much more.

Not only does your profile change what kind of price you’ll get on car insurance, but it also might change the kind of coverage you want! Not all tiers are the same, and it’s important to know what you’re looking for. You could save money on your monthly or yearly insurance premiums by having a higher deductible. But if you do get into an accident or need to file a claim, that choice will cause you to pay more out of pocket.

Car Insurance Laws in Maine

If there’s one thing Maine is known for, it’s the state’s busy summer tourist season. But that increase in visitors migrating to the state for vacation comes with a cost: an increase in car accidents as drivers pack the roads. That’s one reason that drivers on Maine roads must have a minimum amount of liability insurance coverage on their motor vehicles.

As an at-fault state, Maine puts the burden of paying for medical expenses, lost wages, and property damage resulting from an accident on the person who is at-fault. If you live and drive in Maine, here’s what you should know about the minimum coverage amounts when it comes to liability insurance in the state.

What Car Insurance Is Required in Maine?

Before registering and driving a motor vehicle in Maine, you need to make sure that it’s properly insured. As an at-fault state, Maine requires drivers to have a minimum amount of Bodily Injury Liability (BIL), Property Damage Liability (PDL), Medical Payments (MedPay), and Uninsured Motorist coverage.

BIL helps to pay for medical bills and other associated costs from an accident that you cause. Also covered by BIL are the lost wages suffered from having to deal with the effects of the injury and any funeral expenses related to the accident.

PDL, on the other hand, is meant to pay for the property damage resulting from an accident that you cause. This includes damage to another vehicle; an object, such as a fence or pole; or a structure, such as a building. Your PDL coverage will also provide protection if someone else is driving your vehicle with your permission.

Uninsured motorist coverage comes into play when someone hits you and doesn’t have insurance. When this happens, your uninsured motorist coverage will pay for any medical bills or property damage that you suffer, up to your policy limits.

Underinsured motorist coverage is similar to uninsured motorist and is a part of the uninsured motorist coverage. Underinsured motorist insurance pays if the other driver’s policy limits are too low to pay for all of the damages you suffered.

MedPay, which is similar to the Personal Injury Protection (PIP) used in some states, pays for your medical bills in accident regardless of who is at fault. While PIP also pays for lost wages, MedPay does not. Fortunately, your healthcare plan, if you have one, can help pay for injuries sustained in an accident as well.

Can You Drive a Car Without Insurance in Maine?

Not only is it against the law to drive without the required minimum amount of auto insurance coverage in Maine, it’s also against the law to drive without proof of insurance. Failure to maintain this evidence can result in a series of fines and penalties.

For a first offense, you should expect to pay a fine of $100 to $500. Your driving privileges will also be suspended until you can provide valid proof of insurance. You will also have to pay a number of fees related to getting your license and registration reinstated. Additionally, you will have to file for an SR-22 certificate and keep it on file for three years.

If you’re in an accident, the court will demand that you show proof of insurance within 30 days. If you cannot show proof of insurance, including with an SR-22 certificate, you will have to surrender your driver’s license and registration to the court. Failure to do so will result in a $2,000 fine and up to six months in prison. You must also get and maintain an SR-22 certificate in this instance and pay to have your license and registration reinstated once you do get them back.

What Are the Minimum Car Insurance Requirements in Maine?

To stay in compliance with the law in Maine, you must have a certain minimum coverage amount when it comes to car insurance. This is done to protect drivers from the costs of an accident that they do not cause, including paying for any medical costs and property damage you suffer in the accident.
