Whether it’s the brand new Rivian R1S or the trusty Audi e-tron, the Tesla Model X has quite a few major rivals at this point.
Tesla might be the most popular and innovative electric vehicle (EV) brand, but it’s far from the only option or the best value—especially when it comes to luxury electric SUVs. While the Model X holds the No. 1 spot for horsepower and range, it leaves something to be desired in other areas.

1. BMW iX

Starting price: $85,095
Selling points: Impressive range, capable powertrain
Weak spots: Most powerful trim is overpriced
Ranked as Car and Driver’s top luxury electric SUV, the
BMW
iX is the future of luxury EVs. Between the competitive 324-mile range, available motors producing 610 horsepower, and the quintessential BMW elegance, the iX bows to none.
While the 2022 model was only available in a single trim, the 2023 model adds the supercharged M60 trim and an additional 94 horsepower compared to the xDrive50’s two motors. Both models, however, come standard with all-wheel drive but can be equipped with rear-wheel drive and adjustable air suspension
The eight-hour Level 2 charge time and 86 combined MPGe are important, of course, but the interior is where you’ll spend your time—and with the iX’s comfort, you’ll never want to leave. Its modern design, adjustable and heated seats, and overall spaciousness all but guarantees a comfortable ride. With such a futuristic vehicle, you can expect quite a bit of tech innovation as well.

2. Rivian R1S

Starting price: $91,075
Selling points: Seven-passenger capacity, off-road capability
Weak spots: Hefty price tag
The all-new
Rivian electric car
is alrealdy shaking things up with their R1S SUV. As one of the only three-row EVs, the R1S is a cheaper alternative to the Tesla Model X—and with a higher towing capacity to boot. With a total of four motors comprising the powertrain, the R1S gets a whopping 835 horsepower with a 316-mile range
Another rarity among electric vehicles is the off-roading ability the R1S provides. With standard adjustable air suspension, the R1S boasts a maximum ground clearance of 15 inches. While only one trim is available currently, new configurations are expected to join the lineup for future models.
There are two downsides to the R1S, however. First, using a Level 2 charger will take the R1S an estimated 16 hours to fully charge, which is double the time of most competitors. Second, you’ll have to buy your Rivian R1S directly from the automaker rather than a dealership—but it’s more than worth it if you’re in the market for a capable electric SUV.

3. Genesis GV60

Starting price: $59,985
Selling points: Sporty handling
Weak spots: Shorter range than top rivals
The 2023
Genesis
GV60 is brand new to the luxury EV lineup and it’s already giving top competitors a run for their money. With its funky exterior styling, deluxe interior, and one of the lowest price tags in the class, the GV60 is a more approachable luxury electric SUV that still delivers on quality.
The lower of the two trims—the Adventure—makes 314 horsepower, which is plenty for most drivers. It also offers the longest range of the two trims at 248 miles per charge—along with a Bang & Olufsen stereo system, plenty of driver assistance features, and heated and ventilated front seats.
Bumping up to the Performance trim will cost about $9,000 more, but you’ll boost your maximum horsepower up to 483. However, this also means a shorter driving range.
No matter which trim you opt for, you can expect a nearly silent cabin and a dynamic driving experience behind the wheel. That, paired with the GV60’s novel facial recognition and fingerprint scanning tech, makes the GV60 an incredible value for its price.

4. Cadillac Lyriq

Starting price: $62,990
Selling points: Stylish interior, great driving range
Weak spots: Slower than rivals
With the all-new and all-electric Lyriq SUV,
Cadillac
proves that they’ve still got it. The Lyriq provides Cadillac-esque styling and modernity with the bonus of an electric motor—or two if you choose the top dual motor AWD trim. Even as the new kid on the block, it’s already a top competitor for longtime EV favorites—including the Tesla Model X.
Rather than focusing on sheer power like the Model X, however, the Lyriq aims to excel at pure luxury and comfort. The base rear-wheel-drive model offers up to 312 miles of range and 340 horsepower, but bumping up to the dual motor trim will unlock 500 horsepower anda 3,500-pound towing capacity
In true Cadillac fashion, the interior is nothing short of impressive. To make the Lyriq’s cabin as peaceful as possible, Cadillac implements noise cancellation technology in addition to the upscale design touches, like wooden door panels. The expansive 33-inch LED touchscreen infotainment system certainly adds to the effect as well.

5. Audi e-tron

Starting price: $67,995
Selling points: Plentiful cargo space
Weak spots: Shorter range than top rivals
At this point, the
Audi
e-tron is a seasoned professional in the luxury electric SUV arena, and it gets better every year.
The 2023 e-tron boasts a whopping 10 different configuration choices between the regular model and the Sportback model, both equipped with all-wheel drive. Their powertrain gets up to 222 miles per charge with 355 horsepower (or a brief 402 horsepower when in sport mode).
This Audi continues the brand’s reputation for quick and smooth driving experiences, complete with zippy acceleration. When fitted with the optional Tow Package, the 2023 e-tron is also capable of towing up to 4,000 pounds
The interior is predictably refined with several high-res display screens and an optional head-up display. Comfort is not in short supply, but if you need more, you can add massaging front seats to your e-tron.

6. Tesla Model Y

Starting price: $67,440
Selling points: Generous tech features
Weak spots: Questionable build quality
The 2023
Tesla Model Y
outranks its more expensive Model X sibling when it comes to all-around value, but it’s not the most impressive electric crossover in town. In fact, the cheaper
Tesla Model 3
is probably the best value of the three.
That being said, the Model Y is a practical choice for tech-loving EV drivers.
Let’s start with the high points: the 2023 Model Y has one of the best driving ranges in the entire class with an estimated 330-mile range. On top of that, it’s got a combined111 MPGe, another chart-topper among rivals.
The Performance Model Y also achieves 60 mph from zero in just 3.6 seconds. If you need more people-hauling power, the Model Y can fit an optional third row of seats as well.
Depending on your level of technophilia, the all-digital environment may be a bonus or a disadvantage. The large infotainment display controls nearly every function of the Model Y—from climate control to your speedometer.
If you get bored while your Model Y is charging, though, you can take advantage of the Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube apps built into the system.

7. Volvo XC40 Recharge

Starting price: $59,845
Selling points: Athletic styling and handling
Weak spots: Unimpressive driving range
The 2022
Volvo
C40 Recharge provides a solid value for EV buyers who value eco-friendliness, practicality, and elegance equally. Its two electric motors provide a satisfying 402 horsepower and a 4.3-second zero-to-60 time.
Its power doesn’t compromise its refined handling, either. So while its 223-mile range doesn’t impress, the XC40 makes up for it in other areas.
The XC40 offers only 46.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the back seats folded, but Volvo adds on optional storage solutions, like under front seat bins and a removable garbage receptacle.
The XC40 Recharge is also equipped with new and intuitive infotainment software, generous standard safety features, and an optional semi-autonomous driving mode.

8. Jaguar I-Pace

Starting price: $71,050
Selling points: Distinguished styling
Weak spots: High price-to-value ratio
The 2022
Jaguar
I-Pace fits the bill for a luxury electric SUV that certainly stands out on the roads. With its futuristic styling and Jaguar emblem, you’re paying for more than just the I-Pace’s capability.
Its 253-mile range and merely average charge time aren’t the greatest compared to rivals, but its quick acceleration, bountiful passenger space, and state-of-the-art interior prove there’s more to a good EV than its battery and motor.
The I-Pace’s 394 horsepower provides a snappy ride, and its standard air suspension and quality steering make that ride as smooth as possible.
The cabin is just as sophisticated as you would expect from a Jag, too. The singular HSE trim comes stacked with active safety features, a topline audio system, leather upholstery, a head-up display, heated and cooled front seats, and a power liftgate.
The new I-Pace model also offers a feature that shows you the nearest charging stations and estimated charge time, which will come in handy on road trips or long commutes.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
