Mitsubishi is not a luxury car brand, but they did produce one luxury car in Japan called the Proudia. American shoppers can still find luxury features in the higher trims of some of Mitsubishi’s top models, like the 2022 Outlander.
Once famed for its sports cars, Mitsubishi is now finding its way into the crossover market. With some impressive upgrades in 2022 and consistently high-reliability ratings, Mitsubishi may not be a luxury car brand, but still has several great options!

Is Mitsubishi a luxury car?

No—Mitsubishi is not a luxury car brand. The only luxury vehicle they produced was the Proudia, which was only available in Japan between 1991 to 2001 and 2012 to 2016. The Proudia was co-manufactured with Hyundai, who marketed it as the Hyundai Equus. There are no luxury Mitsubishi cars available today in America.

What makes a luxury car?

If Mitsubishi isn’t a luxury car, then what exactly is a luxury car? There’s no set-in-stone definition, but there are several features luxury vehicles share in common that put them in a class of their own, including:
  • Comfort features like heated steering wheels and seat massagers
  • Performance features like upgraded suspensions and powerful engines
  • Style features like high-end leather and wood trimming
  • Technology features like expensive entertainment systems and automatic safety features
While Mitsubishi includes plenty of standard features in each of its models, they don’t meet the required standards to be classified as a luxury brand.

Is Mitsubishi a good brand?

Mitsubishi used to be a famed sports car brand, but has seen a recent overall decline. That said, 2022 marked the release of a few exciting new models like the 2022 Outlander and Eclipse Cross, signaling hope for the future of Mitsubishi.
Mitsubishi’s 10-year warranty, affordable prices, and good reliability ratings keep buyers coming back. RepairPal gives Mitsubishi an above-average reliability rating of 4 out of 5 stars and low ownership costs at an estimated $535 a year. J.D. Power echoes this, giving Mitsubishi their top awards in Quality, Dependability, and Performance for 2023.

The best Mitsubishi cars

While Mitsubishi doesn’t offer any luxury vehicles in America, our top three recommendations are the 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, the 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, and the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

Starting at $24,890, the
Eclipse Cross
is a 4-door hatchback offering bold styling, smooth cruising, and abundant cargo space. The base model is positively basic, so for a more luxurious option, consider the SE or SEL trims. Standard features include:
  • Fog lights
  • 60/40-split folding back seats that recline and slide

is a stand-out Mitsubishi option for both speed and handling. Popular among car enthusiasts, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is powered by a peppy turbocharged engine and comes standard with all-wheel drive.
There are only two trims on this high-performance compact sedan: the GSR and MR. For higher-end features, the MR adds a nine-speaker Rockford Fosgate sounds system, keyless entry and ignition, an upgraded center console, and more.

Mitsubishi Outlander

Mitsubishi stepped things up with the 2022
, a competitive compact crossover with eye-catching styling and modern features. At a starting MSRP of $27,290, the Outlander is a bit more expensive than the competition, but the SE trim offers excellent extras for an additional $3,000.
For the most luxurious Mitsubishi Outlander, opt for the top SEL Launch Edition trim, which combines all-wheel drive with all the features from the SE Launch Edition, SEL trim, and Touring package.
Standard features include:
  • Push-button ignition
  • LED headlights
  • 8-inch touchscreen
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration

At the top trims, Mitsubishi adds features like a panoramic sunroof, a 10-speaker Bose audio system, and a head-up display to the 2022 Outlander.
