Is Mercedes-Benz a luxury car?

Yes, Mercedes-Benz is one of the leaders in the luxury car category. With every new model, the German automaker looks for innovative ways to outclass and outperform their competition—worthy foes like BMW, Genesis, Tesla, Audi, and more.

Is Mercedes-Benz a good luxury brand?

Mercedes-Benz is regularly mentioned in the same breath as Rolls-Royce and Bentley, so it’s safe to assume that yes, Mercedes-Benz is a good luxury brand.
At a fraction of the cost, Mercedes-Benz produces world-class vehicles that are competitive even with the white whales of the luxury car category. Your street-cred gets an instant boost when you roll up in a Benzo.

The best Mercedes-Benz luxury cars

Mercedes-Benz currently offers 20+ luxury cars, all with various trim levels for even greater optionality and customizability. We’d be here all day if we looked at every single one, so let’s take a look at some of the most popular and exciting models you’ll find at your local dealership.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is the automaker's top-selling sedan, achieving 30,815 unit sales for 2021. Starting at $43,500, it's the perfect upgrade over the A-Class—and not too much of a step down from the ultra-luxurious S-Class.
Some of the highlights of the C-Class include:
  • Heated front seats
  • Power tilt/sliding tinted glass sunroof
  • 11.9-inch touchscreen central multimedia display & 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster
  • 64-color LED ambient lighting
  • Blind Spot Assist and PRE-SAFE®
And with three different trim levels (Premium, Exclusive, and Pinnacle), you’ll have many more features to consider, like MB Navigation with augmented video and optional AMG design upgrades.
However, while there are many customizable technology and style options, the performance is standardized (other than the option of all-wheel-drive). Here is what you can expect from a C-Class sedan:
Key Specs
Engine
255-hp 2.0L Turbo Inline-4
Transmission
9-speed automatic
Drivetrain
Rear-wheel drive or All-wheel drive (4Matic)
0 to 60
6 seconds to 5.3 seconds (4Matic)
EPA fuel economy (mpg)
29 combined / 25 city / 35 hwy

Mercedes-Benz AMG GT

AMG is the high-performance subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz. So with the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT, not only do you get an extremely luxurious vehicle, but you get a tuned engine that is competitive even with sports cars.
Let’s cut right to the chase—here are performance metrics for the 4-door and 2-door variants:
See, we weren’t kidding! The 3.7-second zero to 60 speed on the 2-door Mercedes-Benz AMG GT is faster than some Porsche models. These cars are seriously in a category of their own.

Mercedes-Benz EQS

Not only is Mercedes trying to fight off its familiar rivals in BMW and Audi, but it’s also squaring up against Tesla in the electric vehicle category. The Mercedes-Benz EQS claims to be the first all-electric vehicle in the luxury class (even though Tesla would argue it is a “luxury” vehicle too). Let’s take a look at the specs:
Key Specs
Engine
329-hp Permanently Excited Synchronous (PSM) electric motor
Transmission
Single-speed automatic transmission
0 to 60
5.9 seconds
All-electric range
350 miles

Mercedes only sold 443 units of the EQS in 2021, but the plan is to make this model the flagship EV for the brand. Considering Tesla sold 302,000 units in the same year, they have a lot of work to do. But with a German masterclass in engineering and a keen eye for luxury, we expect Mercedes-Benz to make a considerable dent in the EV market sooner rather than later.

Mercedes-Benz luxury SUVs

While Mercedes-Benz is well-known for its luxury cars, SUVs are their real bread and butter. Models like the GLE and GLC have well over 50,000 annual sales each, outpacing any sedan or coupe from the MB lineup by a large margin.
The popularity of these mid-size SUVs comes from their delicately balanced design that simultaneously supports efficient aerodynamics and a roomy cabin area.

FAQs

Honestly, it depends on who you ask! Both brands offer incredible vehicles that optimize performance and luxury. So to avoid any drama, we’ll defer taking a side in this long-running rivalry—sorry!
The cheapest Mercedes-Benz is the A-Class, which starts at $35,000. But other ultra-luxury models, like the S-Class, easily exceed $100,000. So the word “expensive” is a little relative to the model you select and how far your wallet is capable of stretching.
