Meet the largest Volkswagen SUV: The Atlas

For a starting price of $35,630, the 200.7-inch long Volkswagen Atlas, with 96.8 total cubic feet of cargo room and three rows of seating, makes itself known when on the road. For a company that didn’t even start manufacturing its first SUVs until 2011, that’s a big step up from its more compact predecessors.
While size is the Atlas’ biggest claim to fame, it's not the only thing it has to recommend. Drivers have the option to add all-wheel drive to any of the trims and can opt for either a four-cylinder engine with 235 hp or a V6 engine that boosts the horsepower up to 276. Your engine choice will also determine your towing capacity: those equipped with the four-cylinder have a towing capacity of around 2,000 pounds, while those with the V6 engine can tow up to 5,000 pounds depending on the configuration.
When it comes to speed, the Atlas isn’t breaking any barriers, but its 7.2-second 0-to-60 time is at least respectable, as is its fuel economy: 21 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.
The interior is built for comfort and practicality; with enough room for every passenger, plenty of cupholders, USB ports in every row, a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, and a six-speaker sound system. Adding the technology package means you’ll up that screen size to 8.0 inches and add SiriusXM 360L satellite radio and a wireless phone charging pad
Overall, the Atlas is a sturdy and spacious large family vehicle that makes sense for those who find themselves on the go. Check out the table below for more on the model:

Cargo and towing

Size is where the Volkswagen Atlas really shines—it doesn’t just offer plenty of room for passengers, it also comes with plenty of space for lugging around cargo. Here are the specs for the storage space of an Atlas:
  • Cargo volume behind first row: 96.8 cubic feet
  • Cargo volume behind second row: 55.5 cubic feet
  • Cargo volume behind third row: 20.6 cubic feet
Those numbers are pretty impressive for its class, rivaling even the most popular of the competition. The
Chevrolet Tahoe LS
, for instance, only has about 15.3 cubic feet of space behind the third row, while the
Honda Pilot
Sport has about 16.5 cubic feet.
If you don’t need all that space and want to save a little cash, but you still like the look and feel of the Atlas, your answer may be the Atlas Cross Sport. This two-row alternative still offers 77.8 cubic feet of cargo space with those seats folded down. At a starting price of $34,930, the Cross Sport is about $1,000 less than its full-sized friend.

Volkswagen Atlas vs. the competition

So the Atlas is the biggest SUV in Volkswagen’s line-up, but how does it compare to the competition from other makers? Check out the table below to get a better idea of how the Atlas stacks up.
While it's clear from these numbers that the Atlas comes up short on horsepower, it’s also clear that it comes first in terms of space. With its competitive price, the Atlas asks buyers to consider if a little more power and smoother handling is more important to them than a ton of space for both passengers and cargo.
