2023 Ford Ranger Raptor vs. 2022 Ford F-150 Raptor: the lowdown

Let’s paint with a broad brush first and go over some of the major distinctions between these two trail beasts:
  • Size: It might go without saying, but the Ranger and F-150 are in two different size categories—midsize and full-size, respectively. The body styling is also different. The Ranger is body-on-frame as opposed to the F-150’s chassis-cab build.
  • Availability: The Ranger Raptor debuted on the international market in 2018, but won’t be available in the US until sometime next year. It was originally only meant for markets where the F-150 Raptor was unavailable, but popular demand has led Ford to announce a domestic release. The F-150 Raptor is readily available.
  • Price: For the F-150, the Raptor is one of the more expensive trims, starting around $72,000. Although the Ranger Raptor hasn’t been released yet, it’s estimated to cost somewhere around $45,000.
  • Towing: It’s estimated that the Ranger Raptor will be able to pull anywhere from 5,500-7,500 pounds, depending on the configuration. Conversely, the F-150 Raptor can tow 8,200 pounds, not quite as much as other trim levels thanks to the focus on off-road performance.
That’s only scratching the surface, though. Let’s zoom in and take a more detailed look at the differences between the Ranger Raptor and the F-150 Raptor.

2023 Ford Ranger Raptor vs. 2022 Ford F-150 Raptor: power & performance

Let’s take a look at some of the specs that would be a priority for pickup owners: powertrain, horsepower, and efficiency.
The Ranger Raptor is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 paired with a 4WD 10-speed automatic transmission. It’s capable of generating 392 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of
torque
.
The F-150 Raptor is equipped with a special engine unique to the trim, a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 (450 hp, 510 lb-ft) that’s also married to a 4WD 10-speed automatic transmission
Let’s see how the two powertrains compete in the table below:

2023 Ford Ranger Raptor vs. 2022 Ford F-150 Raptor: interior & storage

Despite the obvious size difference between the two, the Ranger Raptor and the F-150 Raptor share a single cab length and bed configuration—a four-door SuperCrew cab with a 5.5-foot bed. It’s the perfect choice for a truck meant for camping and outdoor trips because you and your passengers will enjoy the comfortable roominess, modern design, and bountiful storage space for your tents, cookstoves, chairs, and whatnot.

2023 Ford Ranger Raptor vs. 2022 Ford F-150 Raptor: technology

Tech features might not seem like a major priority for anyone interested in a pickup truck, but Ford included some neat stuff for both models all the same.
The Ranger Raptor might not be available in the US just yet, but it’s expected to have an 8-inch touchscreen, Ford’s Sync3 infotainment system, and a subscription-based WiFi hotspot. There will also likely be a handful of add-on options like charging ports, a navigation system, and a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system. Furthermore, it’s very likely that the Ranger Raptor will be equipped with Ford’s Co-Pilot360 driver’s aid suite, which includes a blind-spot monitor, lane-keeping assist, and forward collision warning
The F-150 Raptor is no slouch, though, with its 12-inch touchscreen interface, Sync4 infotainment system, and the ability to receive over-the-air wireless updates. Its single coolest tech feature has got to be the optional 2.0 kW generator that can be mounted in the cargo bed, which allows you to use power tools, speakers, or even small household appliances. The generator would be an awesome addition to your next camping trip, proving that roughing it doesn’t have to be quite so rough.

2023 Ford Ranger Raptor vs. 2022 Ford F-150 Raptor: off-roading & towing

This is it, the moment you’ve all been waiting for. Both of these monstrous machines are absolutely unstoppable out on the trail, but the Ranger Raptor can’t quite keep up with its slightly larger, slightly more powerful sibling.
It’s still a very competitive race, especially since we awarded both the
Ranger
and the
F-150
a “Trail Boss” rating for off-road performance, our highest honor in that particular category. Looking at the table below, though, you can see that the F-150 can do pretty much anything the Raptor can do, only slightly better.

It’s not a one-sided affair by any means, but the F-150 pulls ahead of the Ranger in most respects. It’s taller, has a bigger engine, and can pull more weight behind it, although the Ranger does have a slight advantage on the approach/departure angles.
One cool feature that both trucks share is the six available terrain modes that you can switch between depending on where you’re driving and what the conditions are like. Take a look at all the different kinds of terrain you can conquer with both of these trail beasts:
  • Normal mode
  • Sport mode
  • Grass/Gravel/Snow mode
  • Mud/Sand mode
  • Rock mode

2023 Ranger Raptor vs. 2022 Ford F-150 Raptor: safety

Both the Ranger Raptor and the F-150 Raptor are very safe vehicles, thanks to an impressive suite of driver’s aid features and high marks from the automotive safety authorities. Once again, though, the F-150 edges the Ranger out ever so slightly.
The 2022 F-150 was awarded a coveted five-star safety rating from the
NHTSA
, as well as a majority of “Good” scores from the IIHS.
The Ranger Raptor has not been specifically reviewed just yet, but we can get a good idea of what the ratings would be by looking at the standard 2022 Ranger’s scores. The base Ranger model received a four-star rating from the NHTSA and a similar majority of “Good” ratings from the IIHS
One last thing of note is that the IIHS gave both trucks low marks for the quality of their headlight and seat belt reminders.

2023 Ranger Raptor vs. 2022 Ford F-150 Raptor: reliability

Once again, we’ll have to infer what the Ranger’s reliability score might be based on the standard model. This time, though, it strongly benefits the Ranger, because Consumer Reports gave it an impressive 4 out of 5 reliability rating.
The 2022 F-150, meanwhile, lags significantly behind at 2 out of 5, thanks to a longstanding series of engine problems and the fact that it has already been recalled three times by the NHTSA. Still, that doesn’t change the fact that the F-150 has been one of the top-selling vehicles in the US for decades now, and the owner satisfaction score is currently sitting at a cool 89/100.

Which is better: Ranger or F-150?

So, we’ve come to the crux of the matter; which is the better truck, the Ranger or the F-150?
In almost every category, the F-150 has the advantage over the Ranger. It has a bigger engine, can haul more weight, and it’s the safer choice between the two. Although the Ranger comes extremely close, the F-150 beats it ever so slightly almost every time.
That extremely narrow discrepancy between the two might not be a negative, though. In fact, it might be one of the stronger arguments in the Ranger’s favor. After all, the Ranger Raptor is expected to cost between $15k-$20k less than the F-150 Raptor. Given that it comes so close to the F-150 for much less money, many people might find the Ranger the more attractive option.
At the end of the day, only one person can decide what makes the perfect truck, and that person is you, dear reader.
