What is the Chevrolet Trail Boss Package?

The Chevrolet Trail Boss Package is an
optional package
that you can add to the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Custom and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT trims. It also comes standard on the Colorado Trail Boss trim. With a serious emphasis on off-roading, these trims will be decked out to tackle just about any terrain.

What’s included

The Trail Boss Package upgrades two already capable pickups, allowing for more efficient off-roading with the following features:
  • 2.0-inch factory suspension lift
  • 20-inch Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac heavy-duty mud terrain tires
  • 18-inch high gloss black painted wheels
  • Automatic locking rear differential
  • Hill Descent Control
  • Hill Start Assist
  • Multi-Flex tailgate

What it does

The Trail Boss Package makes off-roading in the Silverado 1500 and Colorado safer and easier than ever, while also accenting your truck in a hardcore, yet stylish look.
One of the first things that will catch your eye on the Trail Boss Package is the enhanced wheels wrapped in heavy-duty tires, which are ideal for hitting any trail. On the other hand, mud terrain tires will wear down faster on paved roads, so routinely check your tires if you rack up a lot of miles on these roads.
To give drivers more control over any terrain, the Trail Boss Package includes the upgraded drivetrain features of Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist. Once activated, these trucks will utilize their traction control and anti-lock brakes to minimize slippage and make tackling slopes a breeze.
For added protection, this package also includes underbody skid plates, so you never have to worry about dirt or rocks being kicked up and contaminating or damaging your truck’s valuable parts—ultimately saving you more money in the long run.
And finally, the extra two-inch factory suspension lift gives your pickup even more ground clearance, bringing your suspension up over 10 inches on both models. This higher elevation will allow you to drive over rough and uneven surfaces with even more ease and the peace of mind of knowing you won’t scrape the bottom of your truck on anything you’re driving over.

How much is the Chevrolet Trail Boss Package?

Opting for the Trail Boss Package will automatically add roughly $10,000 to your truck’s base price, and the exact cost will depend on which trim you are adding it to. Let’s take a closer look:
  • Custom 147-inch: $51,800
  • Custom 157-inch: $52,100
  • LT 147-inch: $58,000

Is the Trail Boss Package worth it?

It really boils down to what you are looking to get out of your truck. If you plan to spend just as much (or more) time driving off the road than on it, the Trail Boss Package offers the most utility by far. If your truck is going to be used more as an everyday vehicle or for work, the Texas Edition Plus trim might suit you better.
The Trail Boss Package, unfortunately, cannot be added to the base Silverado 1500 or Colorado, so if this package is the route you wish to go, you will be looking at a price tag somewhere between $37,000 and $58,300. To keep costs down while still getting useful features, the Silverado 1500 LT Texas Edition Plus will set you back $49,940—considerably cheaper than the LT Trail Boss.
Some models allow you to combine multiple packages when you go up in trim level, but if you want the Trail Boss Package, you will specifically need to buy the Silverado 1500 Trail Boss, Silverado 1500 LT Trail Boss, or Colorado Trail Boss

Trail Boss Package vs. the Texas Edition Plus

The Texas Edition Plus trim proves to be one of the best values in the Silverado 1500 lineup due to the inclusion of the Convenience Package II and some additional features sprinkled in. You also get some new, stylish touches with this trim, such as Grazen-painted interior pockets and Texas Edition badging.
There is also the Texas Edition Premium Package, which further amplifies Texas Edition Plus. Offered on the upper-trim level RST, this package includes all the features of the Texas Edition Plus, the Safety Package, the Leather Package, and the Protection Package. This will run you around $62,000—a steep cost for mostly cosmetics and no off-roading upgrades.
The Silverado 1500 Texas Edition offers 20-inch aluminum wheels, which are actually bigger than the ones slapped on the Trail Boss, and also includes the following features from the Convenience Package II:
  • A universal home remote
  • Rear power sliding window
  • Hitch Guidance with Hitch View
  • Trailer brake controller
  • Trailering app
In the end, it will come down to which features you will use more and are comfortable paying for. If the bigger wheels and convenient tech sound more your speed, they can be yours for thousands of dollars less than the Trail Boss Package.

The bottom line

If you are an off-road junkie through and through, the Trail Boss Package is probably worth it. The increased price will give you a dedicated collection of improvements to the truck’s body, handling, and design that will best prepare you to handle any trail like, well, a boss!
