The 2022 BMW X7 might be big, bold, and powerful, but it isn't much more exciting than the 2021 version.
The biggest Bimmer on the block made a splash when it landed in 2019. The X7 combines BMW's most forward-thinking technologies with timeless luxury favorites like Merino leather, contoured seats, and wireless entertainment. One glance at its killer looks and we’re sure you’ll agree: wherever the X7 goes next, it’s bound to be exciting.

Has the 2022 BMW X7 been redesigned?

No—BMW hasn’t yet updated the first-generation X7 since it debuted in 2019. Instead, 2022 reshuffles the standard features and options available in 2021, but it’s still fundamentally the same car.
Opt for the base xDrive40i trim and you’ll still get a 335-hp turbocharged inline-six engine. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, it provides an impeccably smooth and pleasant ride for you and up to five passengers. What’s more, this trim gets the best fuel economy with 21/19/24 mpg (combined/city/highway).
But the cherry on top is the X7’s extensive list of standard features, including:
  • Adaptive LED headlights that track your steering
  • Self-leveling air suspension
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Power dual-section tailgate
  • Keyless entry and ignition
  • App-connected remote start and monitoring
  • Four-zone automatic climate control
  • Heated, 14-way power front sport seats, armrests, and steering wheel with driver memory function
  • SensaTec simulated leather upholstery
  • Digital instrument cluster
  • 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen with navigation system, HD Radio, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, auxiliary audio jack, USB port, and Bluetooth
  • 10-speaker Hi-Fi sound system
  • Wi-Fi hotspot
The standard BMW Active Driving Assistant helps you drive as safely as possible. This driver assistance technology suite bundles forward-collision warnings with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, lane-departure warnings, and automatic high beams. Parking is arguably the most difficult part of driving a large SUV, so the X7 also comes with a back-up camera and front and rear parking sensors.

2022 BMW X7 vs. 2021 BMW X7: what’s new?

Can't decide between this year and last? For your convenience, we've included a list of all changes in the 2022 BMW X7 vs. 2021 BMW X7. We’ll also discuss whether the X7’s value holds up. Without further ado, let’s go!

Remove a feature, add another

Were you surprised when you couldn’t find wireless device charging on the X7's list of standard features? It’s not your imagination: the feature has been removed and replaced by standard Enhanced Bluetooth (EBT). With EBT, you can pair up to two phones for hands-free calling and music streaming, plus reading emails, sending texts, marking tasks, and more in Microsoft Office.

New sunshades for the M50i

There's a lot to like about the mid-level M50i trim: its twin-turbocharged 4.4L V8 engine delivers 523 hp without ever feeling out of control. You can’t expect a lot of fuel mileage (just 17 mpg combined), but you can look forward to loads of luxury. Inside this leather-lined retreat, you'll find:
  • M Sport brakes with blue calipers
  • Self-catching, soft-closing doors
  • Heated, multi-contour bucket front seats with four-way lumbar support
  • Leather upholstery
  • Projected windshield HUD display
  • Infotainment gesture controls
  • Surround-view camera
  • 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system
  • Real-time traffic display
After such an impressive list of features, the fact that the 2022 M50i's second row now includes power sunshades (rather than manual ones) is somewhat anticlimactic. Again, there are no significant changes to be found.

Individual options removed

A buyer who wanted one or two features from the Dynamic Handling Package could add them individually to the xDrive40i in 2021. Not in 2022—the complete package costs $3,850 and includes:
  • Integral Active Steering
  • M Sport brakes with blue calipers
  • Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview
Currently, the only performance-oriented individual option left is M Sport Brakes, with either blue or black calipers, for $650.

Buyers aren’t generally bothered by minor changes as long as they don’t come with a major price increase. Fortunately, the 2022 X7 won't cost you a penny more than the 2021 version. Here's the price list:
  • xDrive 40i: $75,895
  • M50i: $100,795
  • Alpina XB7: $142,295
In case you’re wondering, the 2022 Alpina XB7 packs 612 hp under the hood thanks to its twin-turbo V8. It's incredible to see such a huge SUV—sorry, “SAV” (Sport Activity Vehicle)—sprint to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds. In addition to an eight-speed automatic sport transmission, you get:
  • First and second-row sliding and tilting glass panorama sunroof with power sunshade
  • Third-row sunroof with power sunshade
  • Heated power exterior mirrors
  • Rain-sensing wipers
  • Heated sport LAVALINA leather steering wheel
  • Genuine wood and metal interior inserts
  • Merino leather upholstery and dashboard
  • Ventilated, massaging front seats
  • Four 12V DC power outlets
  • Extended Traffic Jam Assistant
  • Aerial-view camera system

Should you buy a 2022 BMW X7?

No, in our opinion. With so few changes and prices falling every year, the 2021 X7 will only become a better buy than its younger sibling. As a reminder, BMW also offers extremely competitive warranties with every purchase, including a:
  • Four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty
  • Four-year/50,000-mile drivetrain warranty
  • Four-year/unlimited-mile roadside assistance plan
  • 12-year/unlimited-mile rust warranty
  • Three-year/36,000-mile complimentary maintenance plan
With an Editor's Choice Award from
Car & Driver
and a Quality & Reliability rating of 83/100 from
JD Power
, there’s no reason to buy new—unless you get the chance to test drive next year’s model.
The 2023 BMW X7 features a mid-cycle facelift, more standard features, and new driver-assistance technology. Additionally, you'll get up to 40 more horsepower and a new trim, the M60i, which replaces 2022's M50i. The only downside is a $3,000 price jump across the board.
