2023 BMW X7 vs. 2022 BMW X7: what’s the difference?
Since the 2022 BMW X7 was a redesign year, don’t expect too many changes with the 2023 model. One glance shows you that BMW had fun giving the X7 a facelift.
Although it’s sure to divide drivers, the X7 gets a striking split-headlight configuration. The interior also gets sleek, smooth styling, and drivers enjoy the option of additional paint choices.
Performance specs don’t change much. The newer model packs a bit more horsepower with the base trim, and fuel economy improves by a very small amount. Other than that, the difference between the 2022 and 2022 BMW X7 really comes down to aesthetics.

General specs
If you’re hoping that the higher price tag translates to more power, you might be a little disappointed. Only the base model xDrive40i engine sees an increase in horsepower—a modest 40 hp improvement. Otherwise, engine performance is the same between both model years.
That being said, horsepower varies widely among engine options. The xDrive40i engine might not have the ridiculous horsepower that the Alpina engine puts out, but it’s the most fuel-efficient (and will be the kindest on your wallet).

Fuel economy
You won’t see much difference between the X7 model years in terms of gas mileage, although the 2023 X7 tends to get about one mpg more across trim levels. Keep in mind that your exact fuel efficiency depends on how and where you drive, but here’s the EPA-estimated mileage:

Unfortunately, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has tested or ranked the BMW x7 for either model year. Reading through the safety specs, you’ll find that both model years have the same standard driving and safety features, which include lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, collision warnings, and blind-spot monitoring.
It’s also critical to note that the 2022 BMW X7 was recalled twice—once for a sunroof malfunction and once for the third-row seat being improperly installed (so it may come loose during a crash and increase the risk of injury).
The 2023 model didn’t fare much better. It was recalled for the same sunroof malfunction and the windshield not being attached properly. The third recall was for a front parking light malfunction that caused a loss of visibility.
Styling and interior changes
If you thought the front exterior of the 2023 X7 was a big change, wait till you see inside! Instead of the standard straight-styled dash, the 2023 has a more welcoming curved display with an ambient light bar. The shifter looks different, too! No longer a stick, it’s a luxurious circular toggle that matches the smooth interior design.
In terms of comfort and technology, many features remain the same for both model years, including:

- Cruise control (adaptive cruise control is an option)
- Dual moonroof
- Power liftgate
- Leather-wrapped steering wheel
- Navigation system and hands-free communication system
- 12.3-inch touchscreen
- Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity
There are a few upgrades that the 2023 X7 boasts. A cutting-edge head-up display is standard on the newer model, while it’s only optional for the 2022. The seats on the 2023 are more comfortable, too. You’ll enjoy power driver and front passenger seats with memory capability.
