The M Sport package is actually a top-of-the-line trim—commonly referred to simply as simply “M.” It’s available on several of BMW’s models, including the mid-size X5 SUV.
M Sports have a sportier look and driving feel than their non-M counterparts, serving up the overall experience of a high-performance vehicle at a (slightly) lower cost.
What’s included
M Sports include a variety of upgrades to make the vehicle feel, well, sportier:
- Lots of exterior styling changes, including a deeper front bumper with larger air intakes, “M” badges behind the front wheels, bigger wheels, lower suspensions, and more.
- Interior styling changes such as sport seats, a thicker steering wheel with the “M” logo at the bottom, metallic dashboard trim, and more.
- A more athletic driving experience thanks to those bigger wheels and upgraded suspension, as well as more aggressive brakes.
- Lots of basic tech equipment like navigation, climate control, smartphone connectivity, etc.
What it does
The M Sport package takes your X5 from a posh, silky-smooth, versatile SUV to one that is clearly built with performance in mind.
Its 4.4-liter BMW M TwinPower Turbo V-8 engine churns out a whopping 600 horsepower, while wider tires give more grip, the suspension reduces the extent to which the car leans into corners and the brakes bring it to a stop more quickly.
In short, the X5 M is quite simply fun to drive. However, it’s important to note that it may not feel quite as comfortable as other X5 trims. The lower suspension and tires mean that you feel road bumps a bit more easily—and, while the vehicle handles great out on the winding road, it may feel a bit more clunky when driving around down. That said, you can always add an optional adaptive air suspension to remediate this issue.

Once again, the M Sport isn’t so much a package as it is a trim. The 2022 BMW X5 M has a six-figure starting price of $105,900, and adding on additional options will only make that price tag grow.

Is the M Sport package worth it?
The M Sport package will cost you a pretty penny—but if you want a BMW X5 that’s uniquely styled and prioritizes performance over comfort, then it very well might be worth the price tag. Also, because they’re so popular, M Sport models tend to hold their value exceptionally well, meaning your resale value may be higher than if you opt for a different version of the X5.
With that said, the X5 M Sport might not be the vehicle for you if you’re looking for a silky-smooth, comfortable family mover. It’s an absolute riot while pushed to the limit, but other X5 trims are better suited for standard driving about town.

M Sport vs. the M50i
With all these numbers and letters, the BMW X5 trims can get quite confusing. So how does the BMW X5 Sport compare to the BMW X5 M50i?
Well, for starters, the M50i is over $20,000 cheaper, with a starting price of $82,800. It’s equipped with the very same 4.4-liter BMW M TwinPower Turbo V8 engine, but only generates 523 horsepower, compared to the M Sport’s 600.
