What are butterfly doors?
Now you might be asking—so what are butterfly doors, anyway? And what’s their purpose?
Butterfly doors, not to be confused with scissor doors, are a type of car door that opens vertically and out from the body using hinges on the car’s A-pillar. You’ll usually find these unusual doors on high-performance cars, like the Ferrari Enzo or McLaren F1 listed above. Butterfly doors were first seen on the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale back in 1967.
Pricey supercars were not the only ones with butterfly doors, even
Toyota
jumped on the bandwagon and released the first mass-produced hatchback coupe featuring these infamous doors—known as the Sera. Initially, butterfly doors were meant to allow drivers to enter and exit their vehicles quickly, though they require more clearance to open properly. But these days it might just boil down to aesthetics, as they add extra flash to an already expensive supercar.
There are a few other car doors one might find on supercars and other high-performance models. Scissor doors are a type of car door that opens upwards from a fixed hinge at the front of the door. They generally take up less space when you open them, unlike butterfly doors. Scissor doors are also known as “Lambo doors,” as they are most commonly associated with the Italian luxury sports car Lamborghini.
