background
Most people know Volvos are some of the safest and most reliable cars on the market, but they are also premium luxury vehicles too—like the graceful

sedan or the plug-in hybrid

wagon.
The Swedes don’t disappoint when it comes to luxury—just look at Volvo’s suite of vehicles. Each one is luxurious and elegant in its own way. Perhaps no other automaker combines luxury, safety, and reliability as well as Volvo. If you’re considering upgrading to a luxury vehicle or switching luxury brands, Volvo is a top-tier choice.
But with a stellar luxury line-up to pick from, the choice of which Volvo to bring home can be a bit overwhelming. Fortunately, the

put together a fancy little guide about all you need to know about the luxuries that come with a Volvo. Plus, we list the best models to choose for each car style that the Swedish automaker offers.

What is a luxury car?

A luxury vehicle is not limited to a specific style of car. It can be a flashy sports car, an elegant SUV/crossover, or even come in the form of a stately pick-up truck.
Luxury cars have higher-quality, more comfortable interiors and come with an array of amenities not typically found on regular ol’ cars. Not only do luxury cars score extra points when it comes to style, but they also typically include more reliable parts and components and have performance advantages over other cars on the road.
Of course, all these sophisticated features and top-tier parts mean luxury cars come with an increased price tag and more costly maintenance. But at the same time, you can opt for an
extended warranty
extended warranty or mechanical breakdown coverage

Are Volvos luxury cars?

You wouldn’t ask if a
BMW
or
Mercedes-Benz
were a luxury car, would you? So what is it about the Swedish automaker that has you second-guessing yourself? Volvos may be best known for their safety and reliability, but these Scandinavian automobiles are indeed luxury vehicles.
Volvo cars, SUVs, and wagons—just like their German counterparts—provide a ride of luxury both inside and out. Their ultra-comfortable and spacious interiors, along with pampering features like heated seats and seat memory, allow for a delightful driving experience.
On the outside, the athletic build of Volvo models highlights the sleek look drivers expect from luxury vehicles.
But beyond its interior and exterior elegance, the Volvo performs at the luxury level with superior specifications and components, making this luxury brand one of the most dependable on the road.

Most luxurious Volvo sedan: S90/S90 Recharge

List price: $52,850
Car & Driver rating: 8/10
The Volvo S90 doesn't try to be a flashy sports car or fancy coupe. Instead, it epitomizes what it means to be a luxury sedan. The elegantly-designed S90 is all about business. Superior interior comfort gives way to the ultimate relaxing driving experience. And its handsome exterior will let anyone who doesn’t already know that Volvos are luxury vehicles.
Apart from its stunning looks, the S90 knows how to perform on the roads. It comes equipped with a 295-hp B6 mild-hybrid powertrain whereas the Recharge boasts a 455-hp plug-in-hybrid drivetrain with an EPA-rated 38 miles of all-electric range.

Most luxurious Volvo SUV: XC90/XC90 Recharge

List price: $50,900
Car & Driver rating: 9.5/10
It used to be that only sedans were luxury cars, but try telling that to
Volvo XC90
. This beautiful three-row SUV is the total luxury package that can get the whole family around in style. Its plush interior holds its own with other luxury competitors like the
BMW X5
and
Porsche Cayenne
Each XC90 engine option comes standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission. No matter which trim you choose, you’ll have an excellent engine under the hood. But if you want to go green and get some extra horsepower to boot, opt for the Recharge trim which achieves 455 horsepower, greater acceleration, and 35 miles of electric-only range

Most luxurious Volvo crossover: C40 Recharge

List price: $59,845
Car & Driver rating: 7.5/10
The exterior body of the C40 Recharge is cut to perfection, making this a well-toned Crossover. In addition to its fierce look on the outside, the C40 lives up to Volvo’s luxurious reputation when you take a seat inside. It offers a plethora of storage options for a crossover without taking away from the comforts a luxury vehicle demands.
Though just a heads up on the inside: the C40 Recharge is the first Volvo model to be completely leather-free. If that upsets you, then hopefully the large panoramic sunroof can put the wind back in your sails.
Under the hood of the C40 Recharge, you’ll find a battery pack with 75-kWh of usable energy storage, which Volvo says should deliver about 225 miles of driving range per charge. While 225 should be plenty for most drives, just know that all C40 Recharge models are capable of 150-kW DC fast charging, which means you can reach an 80% charge in just 40 minutes!

Not only is it luxurious, but its spacious design also makes this V60 recharge extremely practical. With all seats in place, the V60 Recharge can carry 529 liters of luggage. That figure jumps nearly three-fold when you lay the seats flat. Just remember that you don’t camp in this wagon—you glamp!
This plug-in hybrid delivers high power, smooth electric propulsion, and incredible drivability. In Pure electric mode, the V60 Recharge lasts 41 miles with zero tailpipe emissions.
