What is the Honda Accord Special Edition?

The Honda Accord Special Edition is a feature-laden alternative that gives more value than the base DX trim but isn’t as expensive as the EX trim. The 2002 Honda Accord SE had an MSRP of $20,850 but can now be found starting at $4,000 used. The Special Edition comes with an upgraded engine, a sunroof, aluminum wheels, remote keyless entry, and other features in the LX

2002 Honda Accord overview

Before diving into the Special Edition’s additional features, let’s first learn about the Honda Accord.
The 2002 Honda Accord remains one of the best mid-size sedans on the market. Although it is the last model year of the sixth-generation redesign, the Accord still received a freshened look. The new engine hood, deck lid, and rear tail lights were updated for an even more chiseled look. However, the 2002 Accord is starting to look dated compared to the newly refreshed

The interior is still roomy with maximum space efficiency, thanks to the airline business-class seating inspiration. The front seats are wide and comfortable, yet the Accord still has a spacious rear-seat area. Loading and unloading from the Accord are convenient thanks to the larger door openings, and the large trunk area is great for storage.
The ride quality of the Accord remains smooth and is easy to handle. With great suspensions, even the bumpiest roads are dampened and the tires stay planted on the road. Some may say the handling is even better than more expensive competitors. Unfortunately, at the handling limit, it still tends to oversteer. While this is characteristic of front-wheel-drive cars, it is still a weakness that has remained with the sixth-gen Accords.
The Accord is also available with a 3.0L V6 engine option, giving shoppers more options if they are looking for greater performance. The Accord EX V6 is light on its feet (or wheels), with sharp transient response and excellent brakes. Drivers will be thrilled to know that the V6 trims provide a versatile driving experience, with a feisty demeanor on full throttle, yet a quiet lull when cruising.

What’s special about the Special Edition?

The vastly popular Accord is almost the perfect midsize sedan. However, the bare-bones trim leaves much to be desired. With the lack of power windows and optional air conditioning, it isn’t the most appealing choice on the market, especially when other cars have more standard features.
The Special Edition was introduced to give shoppers a value-added option—this time as a four-door sedan or a two-door coupe! It comes with an upgraded 2.3L I-4 VTEC engine that has a higher compression ratio. The horsepower jumps from 135 hp to 150 hp and the engine has a more powerful torque. The Special Edition is also outfitted with 15-inch silver aluminum wheels, a power sunroof, AM/FM/CD, wood trim, driver’s seat power height adjustment, security system, floor mats, and keyless entry.
Although this long list of extra features will cost an additional $5,350 above the base MSRP, shoppers are getting a $1,000 discount! Fortunately, the 2002 Honda Accord Special Edition costs much less used—sometimes for less than lower trims.

2002 Honda Accord Special Edition vs. EX

While the Special Edition comes with a long list of additional features, the top EX trim can still be more alluring to shoppers. For another $650, upping the starting MSRP to $21,500, the EX trim comes with additional features to the SE:
  • 5-speed manual transmission
  • Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes
  • Driver lumbar support
Unless you are getting the 3.0L V6 version of the EX, these additional features don’t improve the 2002 Accord’s performance significantly. Note that these additional features may also increase car insurance rates since it is a more expensive car.
The bottom line: if you just need a car to get from point A to point B without the frills, the base DX trim is a great choice and keeps costs down. However, if you’re looking for more creature comforts and a more powerful drive, the Special Edition fits the bill.
