Ample tech touches and plenty of driver assistance features make the BMW a strong competitor, and for plenty of people out there, only a Bimmer will do.

3. Porsche Macan

Some Porsche purists were fairly aghast when the maker began producing vehicles on the family-friendly SUV spectrum, but the Macan is a great marriage of a small SUV and everything that people think of when they hear “Porsche.”

Speed demons with deep pockets will want to upgrade to the top-level GTS model, whose twin-turbo V6 engine kicks out 434 horsepower and can go 0-60 in a spine-melting 3.5 seconds.

The back seat room is a bit on the cramped side and the storage space is one of the worst in its class, but let’s be honest—if you’re buying a Porsche, practicality isn’t likely your top priority. But if you want a premium SUV that is also very assertively a sports car, then the Macan is tough to beat.

4. Genesis GV70

Starting price: $42,595 to $63,545

Selling points: Two powerful engine choices, lots of standard luxury features

Weak spot: Cramped back seat

The GV70 is Genesis’ first foray into the realm of compact luxury SUVs, and it’s an impressive effort. The wealth of premium features that Genesis makes standard means that the GV70 will offer great value versus its competition when it comes to what you pay and what you get. Both engine choices are quite peppy and will offer an engaging driving experience no matter which one you select.

The interior of the GV70 is roomy overall and nicely appointed with quality materials, but many reviewers found the rear seat to be a bit on the tight side. This may not be a concern if you’re just hauling kids around, but if you frequently have adults in the backseat things may get a bit snug—especially on longer trips.

5. Lexus NX

Starting price: $39,425 to $58,475

Selling points: Lots of standard driver assistance features, opulent interior

Weak spot: Handling not as exciting as others, bland base engine

There are four different engine choices available for NX, including two hybrid options. The base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is serviceable enough, and for a price, one can upgrade to a gutsier hybrid powertrain. The lower trim levels come with the option of two- or four-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive is standard on the higher trim levels—something to take note of if having an SUV with all-wheel drive is a must-have.

6. Audi Q5

Despite its claims of having an updated engine that increased both power and fuel efficiency, real-world tests failed to deliver. Overall, the QX50 is comfortable and roomy but trails way behind the group when it comes to overall performance.
