2017 BMW 3 Series Sedan

Overall, the 2017 BMW 3 Series is decent, but there are better years for this pedigreed model.

The 2017 BMW 3 series is neither as luxurious nor as sporty as previous—or recent—years. For a used price, you'll get a well-rounded vehicle with enough power and class to make you comfortable.

How much is a 2017 BMW 3 Series sedan?

The BMW 3 Series was originally offered in five different sedans in 2017:
Nowadays, a used 320i in good condition costs around $16,000 to $19,000, depending on where you live and any extras you choose. In 2017, all-wheel-drive xDrive cost an extra $2,000 and it still commands a premium over the base model. Just remember, a higher cost to repair also pushes up

Is a 2017 BMW 3 Series a good buy?

Buying a used BMW 3 Series sedan might be affordable, but is it worth it? According to Car & Driver, the 2017 model performed poorly compared to previous years regarding shifting, suspension, handling, and power. You could be better off with a

, but even a subpar '17 3 Series can be a decent buy, as it nevertheless received a 9/10 rating
Here's what this compact car has to offer:

Reliability

There’s a good chance that any 3 Series sedan you find in the wild has undergone at least one major repair. According to Consumer Reports, brakes and minor transmission issues were among the most frequently reported problems for 2017 models, which have a reliability rating of 3/5. Our advice? Speed and performance

The BMW 3 Series sedan received engine upgrades for 2017 as well as trim name changes. Originally, 3 Series buyers could upgrade from the standard eight-speed automatic to a six-speed manual transmission for no extra charge. Today, you might see a slight price bump due to its relative rarity.

The 2017 3 Series may not be as graceful as previous years, but it remains a powerful athlete. In Edmunds' drive tests, the 330i xDrive went from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds while the 340i xDrive took 4.4 seconds.

Fuel economy

The 2017 3 Series has a very respectable average fuel economy thanks to the optional

Choose RWD and an eight-speed automatic transmission if you want
the premium gas you buy to be worth the price
(except for the 328d, which uses diesel). Manual six-speeds and xDrive will reduce your fuel economy rating by one to two mpg.

Interior and comfort

Sadly, the 3 Series' interior design is another weakness. Even with Ash Grain Wood trim, Dakota leather upholstery, and sports seats, it looks only slightly better than an entry-level car like the 2017 Corolla. Not exactly a great deal, especially when you consider the cheapness of

Five years later, the 3 Series tech is also showing its age. Here’s what you get on the base 320i:
  • Remote locking and unlocking
  • Push-button ignition
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • 6.5-inch infotainment LCD screen with iDrive interface, featuring Bluetooth, BMW Assist emergency telematics, CD tray, auxiliary audio jack, and MP3 player
  • Nine-speaker Hi-Fi sound system
No matter what equipment you have, all sedans come with a trunk space of 13 cubic feet. The higher trims replace the six-way bucket seats with power 12-way heated sport seats, the cloth roof with a panoramic sunroof, and the standard sound system with a 16-speaker Harman Kardon setup.
Look for models equipped with the Premium or Technology packages, which offer plenty of comfort and convenience features. Performance junkies will, of course, prefer the M Sport package, which includes suspension and cosmetic changes.

Safety

With the 2017 3 Series, only ABS, stability control, and traction control are standard. A rearview camera, rear cross-traffic alerts, blind-spot monitoring, and forward-collision warnings all cost extra. For the full safety experience, look for the Driver Assistance and Driver Assistance Plus packages.
Despite its barebones setup, the 2017 3 Series received a
five-star crash rating from the NHTSA
and a
Top Safety Pick+ title from the IIHS
.
