Cheapest car insurance companies in Massachusetts

Finding the best rate for car insurance is a tricky task. Luckily, Jerry conducted a national insurance survey to uncover the best providers for drivers.
The study shows that there isn’t a “best” or “cheapest” insurance company for every driver. Rather, auto insurance companies use different algorithms to calculate insurance rates, so not every company will offer the same rate for the same driving profile.
In Massachusetts,
Liberty Mutual
, ROOT, and
National General
usually offers the cheapest rate for drivers, but other providers like
Progressive
,
Travelers
, and
USAA
may also offer competitive rates.
Here’s what drivers have to say about these insurance providers.

Before you can get behind the wheel of a car in Massachusetts, you must have car insurance that meets the state’s minimum insurance requirement.

require drivers to have basic liability insurance that includes bodily injury coverage, property damage, and personal injury protection (PIP). However, drivers may also choose to purchase
full-coverage auto insurance
for greater financial protection.

Do you need more than the minimum liability insurance coverage in Maryland?

Massachusetts minimum car insurance requirements are low compared to other states, so most drivers should choose to purchase insurance that exceeds the state minimum of 20/40/5.
If you’re involved in an at-fault accident, medical bills and vehicle damages can quickly exceed the state-mandated minimum. A serious crash that leaves your vehicle totaled can cost more than $50,000, while medical expenses can quickly exceed $5,000.
The bottom line: For better financial protection, Massachusetts drivers should purchase car insurance that exceeds the minimum state requirements—50/100/50 or even 100/200/100—or consider purchasing a full-coverage policy.
Lower my car insurance too!

Cheapest full coverage Massachusetts auto insurance quotes

Buying a full coverage car insurance policy is the easiest way to protect yourself against costs associated with repairing or replacing your vehicle if you’re involved in an accident.
A full coverage policy in Massachusetts includes liability insurance plus
comprehensive
and
collision coverage
:
  • Collision insurance: Covers the cost of damage to your vehicle caused by a collision with another object, such as another vehicle or property like a guard rail or tree. Collision coverage pays for the accident regardless of who caused it.
  • Comprehensive insurance: Pays for direct and accidental damage or loss to your vehicle due to something other than a collision—theft, vandalism, fire, falling objects, larceny, or hitting an animal.
If you lease your car, most lenders will require you to purchase a full coverage policy that includes collision and comprehensive coverage.

Average rates for minimum liability coverage and full coverage car insurance in Massachusetts

We’ve worked with several top insurance providers in Massachusetts and found that the average cost of minimum liability coverage is $0per month or $0 per year. The average cost for full coverage insurance in Massachusetts is $0per month or $0 per year.
The average cost of car insurance in Massachusetts is indicative of what you can expect to pay—but because insurance costs are determined by several factors like age and driving record, you may pay more or less. Rates will also vary between providers.

Massachusetts car insurance: Additional coverages

Massachusetts drivers are required to carry the minimum insurance requirements, which include liability insurance and personal injury protection (PIP). If you opt for a full-coverage policy, you’ll also have collision and comprehensive insurance.
For additional financial protection, Massachusetts drivers should consider:
If you have a loan on your car:
Gap insurance
helps cover the difference between the car's actual cash value and the amount you still owe if the vehicle is totaled in a crash or stolen.

Car insurance premium by rating factors

When determining your insurance premium, providers use a variety of factors. Some of the most common factors affecting insurance rates include:
  • Driving record and claims history: Drivers with accidents, tickets, or other violations have higher insurance premiums than drivers with a clean record.
  • Vehicle location: Insurance premiums for drivers in cities are usually higher than in rural areas. Rates also vary based on your ZIP code, even in the same city.
  • Vehicle make and model: Luxury, high-performance, and sports cars usually have higher insurance premiums than non-luxury, less expensive vehicles.
  • How you use your car: Cars driven for work generally have higher insurance premiums than cars driven for leisure.
  • Your credit score: Some states consider your credit score when quoting insurance premiums—drivers with better credit scores usually pay less for the same insurance coverage.
  • Demographics: Age and gender influence insurance rates, with men typically paying more than women and under 25 and over 60 drivers paying higher rates.

How to find cheap Massachusetts auto insurance after a DUI

A serious driving violation like a
DUI in Massachusetts
can have major implications for your car insurance premium. Penalties for DUIs are determined by the severity of the offense and the number of prior convictions in the last ten years—you’ll face more serious consequences for your
second Massachusetts DUI
, for instance.
Still, regardless of the penalty, insurance companies label you as a “high-risk driver.” If an insurer does agree to cover you, you’ll usually pay a much higher premium than drivers without a DUI.
The best way to secure an affordable rate on Massachusetts insurance with a DUI on your record is to shop around for car insurance quotes from multiple providers and compare rates.
Jerry has helped several drivers with a DUI find the lowest rates.

Massachusetts SR-22 insurance

If you have a major violation like a DUI on your Massachusetts driving record you may have to file an
SR-22
before you can regain your license. Insurance providers issue SR-22s to high-risk drivers to prove they meet the state’s minimum insurance requirements.
SR-22s are usually required for the following violations:
  • Driving without insurance
  • Driving without a valid driver’s license
  • DUI
    or DWI conviction
  • Hit-and-run
  • Repeated driving violations
  • An at-fault collision leading to death or injury
If you’re required to file an
SR-22 in Massachusetts
, you will see a sharp increase in your insurance rates until it is no longer required.

How to find cheap car insurance in Massachusetts after an at-fault accident

At-fault accidents on your driving record can be a big cause for an increase in your insurance rate. Insurers look at any at-fault accidents you’ve had to determine how much of a risk you are. The more at-fault accidents you’ve had, the more high-risk you are and the more likely they are to have to make a payout. If you have one or more accidents on your record, you’ll likely see your premium increase when it’s time to renew your policy.

FAQs

No,
Massachusetts car accident laws
designate it as a no-fault state, meaning regardless of who’s at fault for an accident, your PIP insurance will cover the expenses for anyone in your vehicle. No-fault laws in Massachusetts limit a driver's right to sue after an accident—they can only sue for their injuries if their medical expenses exceed $2,000 or if they sustained permanent disfigurement, bone fractures, or loss of hearing or sight.
The bottom line: PIP is required as part of Massachusetts's state minimum insurance requirements to protect you financially if you’re involved in an accident.

Cheapest auto insurance after other violations in Massachusetts

A DUI or speeding ticket might have a significant impact on insurance rates, but so can other violations—like failing to stop at a stop sign, driving without insurance, or driving without a license—all of these can lead to higher-than-average car insurance rates until they’re no longer on your driving record.

Cheapest Massachusetts auto insurance based on insurance history

Your insurance history—how long you’ve had insurance—is one factor used to determine your insurance premium. Insurers want to know that you haven’t had a
lapse in insurance coverage
, so the longer you’ve been insured continuously, the lower your premium will be. Insurance lapses label you as a “high-risk driver,” which comes with a hefty insurance rate.
Don’t panic—Jerry is here to help avoid an insurance lapse! Jerry notifies you when a payment is coming up to help you avoid missing a payment or having a lapse in insurance coverage.

Cheapest Massachusetts car insurance by age

Your insurance premium is determined by several factors, but your age is a big determining factor. Drivers under 25 and over 60 tend to pay the highest rates for insurance due to a lack of driving experience and a higher risk of death and injury, respectively.
USAA, GEICO, and State Farm offer affordable
car insurance rates for new drivers
, but it still pays to shop around to find the best rate for you.

Cheapest Massachusetts car insurance for young drivers

Younger drivers—people under 25—pay the most for insurance of any age group in Massachusetts. This is mainly due to a lack of driving experience that puts them at a higher risk for accidents and, therefore, a higher risk of a claim.
Do note that you may notice lower premiums for a teen driver who only has a
Massachusetts provisional license
. Under a provisional license, new drivers can only operate a vehicle under supervision, so they’re considered lower risk than a young driver with an unrestricted license.
Once a driver gains more experience on the road, rates will decrease, usually after 25. They remain relatively low with a clean driving record until you hit 60, when they increase again.
If you’re under 25, investing in a full coverage policy is recommended for greater financial protection.

Cheapest Massachusetts car insurance for senior drivers

Apart from drivers under 19, drivers over 60 have some of the highest insurance rates—despite having more driving experience.
Because seniors are at a higher risk of mortality, hospitalization, and medical expenses from car accidents and also have slower reflexes behind the wheel, they have a greater chance of being involved in an accident. A higher risk on the road means higher costs for insurers and higher
insurance rates for seniors

Is it cheaper to insure a new car or a used car?

Although the value of most cars usually decreases with age, that doesn’t always mean older cars have cheaper insurance. Insurance rates are determined by how much an insurer would have to pay if the car was damaged, so a more expensive car with higher repair costs means a higher insurance rate, regardless of age. More safety features in a vehicle can also help to reduce insurance costs.
In general, newer cars cost more to insure than older cars. At Jerry, we found that Massachusetts's average full coverage insurance cost for a car older than 10 years is $0 per year. The average cost for insuring a car less than 4 years old goes up to $0a year.

How to find cheap car insurance in Massachusetts in your city

Where you live in Massachusetts can have a big influence on how much you pay for car insurance. Certain areas are subject to higher crime rates, which means a larger payout for insurance companies if cars are stolen or damaged. Urban areas also see higher insurance rates than rural areas due to population differences.
In addition to crime, factors like population density, accident rates, and weather also affect how much you pay for car insurance.
Take a look at the table below to see how Jerry agents helped Massachusetts drivers in different cities save on insurance costs.

FAQs

Looking at the average premium in Massachusetts is a good way to estimate your costs, but because several factors influence rates, rates can vary dramatically between drivers and insurance providers. That’s why we recommend shopping around and comparing quotes from several insurance companies before you commit to a policy.
The average car insurance cost for minimum liability coverage in Massachusetts is $X per month and $X per year. The average cost for full coverage insurance in Massachusetts is $X per month and $X per year.
Many factors influence insurance rates, so no single provider will always offer the best rate for every driver, as shown by Jerry’s survey of over 15,000 car insurance policyholders—the industry's most extensive insurance shopping study.
GEICO, USAA, and State Farm offer some of the most competitive rates for auto insurance policies in Massachusetts, but it’s recommended to shop around and compare rates using a comparison app or website to ensure you’re getting the best rate for you.
Massachusetts drivers are required to carry a minimum of $20,000 bodily injury liability per person, $40,000 bodily injury liability per accident, and $5,000 property damage liability per accident. Drivers must also have $8,000 in personal injury protection (PIP).
Legally, all you need is the state-required minimum liability insurance to drive in Massachusetts. However, it’s almost always a good idea to increase these limits and/or purchase additional coverage so you’ll be financially protected if you cause an accident.
As with all other states, Massachusetts drivers must purchase auto insurance that meets the minimum state requirements before registering their car. If you don’t already have a policy, you’ll need to
buy insurance before purchasing a vehicle
.
To register your vehicle in Massachusetts, you’ll need to bring the following documents to your local DMV:
No, UM/UIM are not required in Massachusetts, and although they have one of the lowest uninsured driver rates in the country, uninsured motorist coverage is recommended to protect yourself financially if you’re involved in an accident with an uninsured or underinsured driver.
As with most states,
car insurance follows the car
in Massachusetts. This includes liability, comprehensive, and collision coverage. PIP, however, follows the driver.
A full-coverage car insurance policy in Massachusetts includes liability, collision, and comprehensive insurance. Because PIP is also required in Massachusetts, it will also be part of a full-coverage policy. If you’re a young driver or have a new or expensive vehicle, we recommend purchasing a full-coverage policy for greater financial protection.
Massachusetts does allow drivers to use out-of-state insurance for 30 days if they are a new resident. However, after the 30-day grace period, drivers must change their policy to an insurance provider licensed to do business in Massachusetts and register their vehicle with the Registry of Motor Vehicle Department. Both insurance and registration must be updated within 30 days of becoming a Massachusetts resident.
Massachusetts is one of a few states where personal injury protection (PIP) is mandatory for all drivers—they are required to have $8,000 in PIP. This coverage helps pay for medical expenses and lost earnings if you’re involved in an accident, regardless of who was at fault.

Methodology

The Insurance Research Team analyzes insurance products and services to drive insights and help consumers make informed purchase decisions.
Insurance research: We analyzed over 25 million car insurance quotes; conducted the largest insurance shopping survey (over 15,000 customers surveyed and 85 carriers reviewed in the past 18 months).
We surveyed insurance policyholders for their experience with their insurers in the following areas: (1) insurance cost (2) customer service (3) insurance buying experience (4) insurance renewal experience (5) claim experience. In addition, we asked people what they like about their insurers and what areas in which their insurers could improve. The driver characteristics used in calculating average rates for auto insurance include: single driver, single car, currently insured, clean driving record.
