A short history of GMC ownership

GMC has been under the GM label for the past 110+ years, but in the brand’s first few years, it went through a few iterations.
Founded by Max and Morris Grabowsky in 1900, GMC was reorganized in 1902 as Rapid Motor Vehicle Company. By 1904, Rapid produced 75 trucks from a factory in Pontiac, MI. In 1908, General Motors founder William C. Durant started to buy up a large percentage of Rapid’s stock. It wasn’t long until the company was represented by GM's sales force.
As GM kept expanding, it incorporated Rapid—by then known as Reliance Motor Car Company—under its corporate umbrella in 1909. 1909 was a pivotal year for Rapid Motor Vehicle, in that one of their trucks made headlines by ascending to the top of Pikes Peak in
Colorado Springs
The GMC logo, which today stands for General Motors Company, was first seen on trucks in 1912. Since then GMC has produced some of the most reliable and capable vehicles on the road.
