One of the oldest all-American car makes, Cadillac was acquired by the General Motors Company (GM) in 1909 and has yet to change hands.
“The Standard of the World” has set many trends in car history, including the first body tailfin, front-seat seatbelts, power steering, and the first heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system to be controlled via thermostat. Nowadays, you’re likely to expect all these features—and more—to come standard with a Caddy. But just where did one of the top American names in
luxury cars
come from? And who’s driving the company right now?
Read on as we take a look at what corporation owns Cadillac, plus how to save money when insuring one.

Who owns Cadillac?

The General Motors Company (GM) has owned Cadillac for over a century. Founded in 1908 to consolidate several early American car companies (including
Buick
and
Oldsmobile
), GM acquired Cadillac just a year later. Thanks to its portfolio of best-selling brands, GM would go on to become the largest American car manufacturer in modern car history.

What other makes does General Motors own?

General Motors’ roster currently includes Buick, Cadillac,
Chevrolet
, and
GMC
, but it used to be much bigger. With operations in Europe and Asia, the majority of GM’s makes never saw the American market. It was the financial crises of the 90s and early 2000s that forced the company to sell all but its four best-selling names.

A short history of Cadillac ownership

Cadillac began life as the failed Henry Ford Company (the last such failure, in fact, before Ford got it right). Shareholders arrived in Detroit to sell off the company’s assets, only to be convinced by machinist Henry Leland that they ought to marry the Ford chassis with the single-cylinder Oldsmobile engine.
The Cadillac Car Company was founded a year later in 1902. The next year, Leland introduced the first Cadillac at the New York Auto Show with a price tag of $850 ($27,925.30 in today’s money). One year later, Leland was at the head of the company with his son, Wilfred.
In 1909, following the union of Buick and Oldsmobile, General Motors Company President William C. Durant made Leland an offer: the Cadillac brand for $4.5 million of GM stock. Leland agreed to the trade, but he and his son still served as executive and production manager, respectively, until Leland left to create Lincoln.
With a
net revenue of $12.3 billion worldwide
in 2021, Cadillac has yet to see another buyer.
