S
, FE+S,

How to check your 2016 Nissan Sentra’s gas tank size

If you’re not clear on how big your particular Sentra’s gas tank is, there are a few ways you can solve that mystery.

Measure the gas tank

The most direct way of confirming your gas tank capacity is by doing it the old-fashioned way: measuring it yourself. All you need to do this is a tape measure and a calculator, an abacus (if you’re really old-fashioned!) or a friend who’s good at math.
Here’s what to do:
  • Measure the height, length, and width of your gas tank in inches.
  • Multiply those three numbers together to get your gas tank size in cubic inches (e.g. 24” x 8” x 15” = 2,880”).
  • Divide your total by 231 (the number of cubic inches in a gallon) to calculate the number of gallons your tank will hold (e.g. 2,880”/231 = 12.47 gallons).

Check your owner’s manual

The easiest way to gather fuel tank capacity info is to simply look in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. This information is found in section 9-2Recommended Fluids/Lubricants and Capacities” of the 2016 Nissan Sentra owner’s manual. Alternatively, you can look for headings like “fuel tank” or “fuel capacity”.

Drive till empty, then fill it up

If you’re an adrenaline junkie, there’s a more thrilling way to check your Nissan’s fuel tank capacity—drive until your gas tank is almost empty, then fill it up and note how many gallons it takes for your gas tank to be full.
It is very important that you do not drive until your gas tank is completely empty, however. Running out of gas will cause your engine to stall, which can compromise your ability to steer and brake. Losing control of your vehicle like that can be dangerous, especially if you happen to be traveling at high speeds.

How to save on fuel costs in a 2016 Nissan Sentra

The Nissan Sentra has very good fuel economy—but just how efficient your particular Sentra is will depend on what type of transmission you have.
All 2016 Sentras are outfitted with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. Most trims come with a continuously variable transmission—or CVT—which is the most fuel-efficient type of transmission available. The 2016 Sentra is also available with a manual transmission, which is a less fuel-efficient transmission setup. Here’s a look at the fuel economy ratings for the 2016 Nissan Sentra for both transmission configurations:
  • 2016 Nissan Sentra with CVT: 29 city/37highway/32 mpg combined
  • 2016 Nissan Sentra with manual transmission: 27 city/35 highway/30 mpg combined
No matter which transmission your Nissan has, there are some things you can do to save on fuel.
  • Keep your car in good working condition. Make sure to
    properly maintain your car
to ensure that your 2016 Sentra is running efficiently and not burning excess fuel. Don’t forget to adhere to the factory-recommended oil change and maintenance schedule.
  • Slow down. Accelerating quickly increases your engine’s RPMs and burns gas faster. You can conserve fuel by accelerating at a more relaxed pace.
  • Don’t let your car run idly. Nobody likes getting into a cold car but
warming your car up in the winter
for too long burns precious gas. Try letting your car warm up as you drive. The money you save is sure to give you a warm, fuzzy feeling on the inside.
