Does car insurance extend to rental cars?

I have my own car and insurance. I am planning to rent a car while I'm out of town. Will my car insurance cover my rental car or will I need to opt into the rental car company's insurance?

Car insurance
policies typically provide some type of coverage to a rental car. However, you’ll want to review your policy terms and conditions before declining the rental car company’s coverage.
If you only have
liability car insurance
on your vehicle, you will need to purchase the rental car company’s collision damage waiver or add full coverage to your personal auto policy. This will ensure that the rental car is protected if you get into an at fault accident. Without physical damage coverage, you’d be responsible for paying for any damage out of pocket.
That said, your credit card you use to make the purchase or reserve the car may offer some type of free coverage, so that’s well worth looking into. If you rent cars frequently, you may want to check with your insurance provider or use the
