Does Farmers Car Insurance Cover Rental Cars?

Your Farmers insurance will extend to rental vehicles, but without a full coverage policy, you might want to purchase additional coverage.

In most cases, Farmers car insurance will also
cover rental cars
. However, if you don’t have comprehensive or collision coverage on your personal policy, you’ll have to pay out of pocket for any damages to your rental vehicle.
While many drivers dismiss rental car insurance as an unnecessary expense, make sure to check that your
car insurance
will cover you before you forgo this type of coverage.
Let’s take a closer look at what Farmers Insurance policyholders can expect when using their existing insurance to cover a rental car.

Does Farmers Insurance offer rental car insurance?

Let’s start with the good news: your Farmers Insurance policy will transfer to most rental vehicles, including passenger cars, trucks, and SUVs.
This means that, if you have standard
full-coverage insurance
through Farmers, the same protections will extend to your rental vehicle of choice. While it’s a good idea to double-check with your Farmers agent, it’s pretty likely that it will. In these cases, you can feel confident in turning down additional insurance coverage from rental companies.
However, if you don’t have both comprehensive and collision coverage through Farmers, you might want to consider purchasing additional coverage for your rental. In the case of an accident, the
liability car insurance
from your Farmers policy will translate to the rental car, and any
bodily injury costs
and/or
property damage
for other drivers will be covered. However, you won’t be covered for any physical damage to the vehicle. That means additional coverage might be necessary to protect your wallet after an accident.

Farmers rental reimbursement

Farmers also offers
rental reimbursement coverage
—which isn’t the same as rental car insurance. Rather, rental reimbursement coverage will help you pay for a rental car if you need a replacement vehicle while yours is being repaired.
This type of coverage is an add-on for Farmers auto insurance policies that already include comprehensive and collision coverage and will usually cost less than $10 per month.
Keep in mind that rental reimbursement coverage does not apply to routine maintenance, so you won’t be able to get a rental car every time your vehicle requires some tuning up. As such, this type of coverage is only worth it if you can see yourself getting into an accident and requiring a rental car.

Is it worth it to get insurance on a rental car?

In some cases, yes.
If you have full coverage with your existing provider, you probably won’t need additional
rental car insurance
Additionally, if you pay for your rental car with a credit card, it’s possible that your provider will offer some rental car insurance options, too.
In some cases, rental car companies will offer you a collision damage waiver (CDW), which covers any losses caused by a collision, or a loss damage waiver (LDW), which removes some of your financial responsibility if your rental is stolen or damaged. Both of these options will often be overpriced, but if you don’t have any coverage through your car insurance or credit card company, getting additional coverage is certainly better (and safer) than driving around uninsured.
Here are some signs that you may benefit from rental car insurance:
  • You don’t have car insurance
  • You just have liability coverage
  • Your credit car company doesn’t offer any rental car coverage
  • The comprehensive and collision coverage on your policy have a high deductible
  • Your insurance agent tells you your policy won’t extend to rental cars
  • You are renting a commercial or business vehicle, not a personal vehicle
  • You want add-ons that you don’t have through your regular policy (like roadside assistance,
    medical payments coverage (MedPay)
    or
    personal injury protection
    (PIP), or travel expenses coverage)
