The 2021 Toyota Sienna and the 2022 Toyota Sienna are identical, save for the 2022’s new Woodland Edition, an outdoorsy edition to the minivan lineup.
Once a soccer-practice-chic minivan, the Toyota Sienna has gotten a makeover in recent years that might make the family do a double-take. The Sienna’s sleek new look makes it look more like a large SUV than a minivan, but it still maintains the roomy interior it’s known for.
The Sienna has always been a top family-friendly pick with a practical interior for all those road trips and memories—but how do the recent models stack up in the market? To help you compare the 2021 and 2022 models of the Toyota Sienna, we’ll go over notable features like price, specs, and fuel economy & safety ratings. Let’s get into it.

2021 Toyota Sienna vs. 2022 Toyota Sienna: what’s the difference?

Our old friend the Sienna is enjoying a refresh. With plenty of new features and all-new styling, both the 2021 and 2022 models of the Sienna are runway—or driveway—ready.
But what are the main differences between the 2021 Sienna and the 2022 Sienna? Did we get a zesty new engine, more high-tech features, or maybe even a new color?
In short, no. The only difference between the 2021 Sienna and the 2022 Sienna is the new Woodland Edition. But is the special edition worth the added pricetag? Let’s unpack everything you need to know to make your decision.

Between 2021 and 2022, the price for each trim went up about $950. There was no Woodland Edition in 2021, so for 2022, it is slotted between the XSE and Limited trims at $46,835. You can find the exact price comparisons in the table below.

General specs

Given the steep price increase, you might be wondering what you get along with that new price tag. In reality, the answer is the exact same car. There’s only one engine available on both the 2021 and 2022—a hybrid engine that gets impressive fuel economy for the size of the car.
Is one car better than the other at off-roading? Not at all. Both cars will have the same off-roading capability, and you’ll have the best shot if you go for the available all-wheel drive. But both of the cars are pretty much the same across the board, so you won’t get any better off-roading if you go with one or the other.

Fuel economy

Both models share identical specs, including the engine and powertrain—which means they’ll have the exact same gas mileage. Since the Toyota Sienna has gone all-hybrid, it’s seen massive improvements in fuel economy that put it ahead of the competition, especially for a minivan.
MPG-wise, the
expects the Sienna to get 36 mpg both on the city and on the highway, with 35 for the all-wheel-drive models. Car and Driver, however, found that it delivered about 29 mpg in their tests.

Safety ratings

When you compare both Sienna models, again, there isn’t any tangible difference in what you’re getting. That means that both the 2021 Sienna and the 2022 Sienna come with the same safety features installed. With blind-spot monitoring, steering assist, pedestrian detection, and more, either of these Siennas are sure to keep you safe.
Whichever model you’re looking at, even the officials have determined that you can’t go wrong in terms of safety—the 2021 and 2022 Sienna models have both earned a 5-star rating from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Styling and interior changes

Nothing with the interior or exterior has changed between 2021 and 2022 for the Sienna. For both models, you’ll be seeing the same standard features, with some highlights listed below:
  • Large central touchscreen
  • Digital rearview mirror
  • Sliding doors and rear hatch with no-touch open and close
  • Apple Carplay and Android Auto compatibility
  • 16 cupholders
  • Foldable third row
  • Second-row footrests
If you’re looking for more from your minivan, you might find some appeal in the Platinum trim. It’s certainly the swankiest trim that the Sienna has to offer, and accordingly, it also comes with the heftiest price tag.
However, if you’re looking to ride in ultimate comfort, the Platinum model has plenty to give: premium leather seating, a heated steering wheel, heated second-row seats, and a 360-degree camera perfect for those tight parallel parking spots. You’ll also get some nice bonuses that aren’t exactly make-or-break but can be fun to have, like rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Special edition

The Toyota Sienna 2022 does have a special edition. In fact, the Woodland Edition is the only difference between the 2021 Sienna and the 2022 model.
What can we expect from this revolutionary new upgrade from 2021? Well, Toyota has made an appeal to outdoors enthusiasts with this one. It comes equipped with everything you’ll need for the next camping trip—like a raised suspension setup, roof racks, a power outlet, and a tow hitch. It also comes with all-wheel drive with no need to purchase an upgrade.

2021 Toyota Sienna vs. 2022 Toyota Sienna: which should you buy?

Let’s face it: these two models are the same car with a new name and price, with the exception of the 2022 Sienna model’s new Woodland Edition.
Unless you’re dead set on fulfilling your outdoorsy minivan fantasy with the Woodland trim, your best bet is to go with whichever one is cheaper. You’ll be getting the same of everything else that matters.
