What are butterfly doors?

You’ll often hear butterfly doors referred to as Lambo doors, but they’re not the same thing. Butterfly doors were popularized by supercars like the McLaren P1, Ferrari’s LaFerrari, and the
Mercedes-Benz
SLR McLaren. Butterfly doors open up and out at an angle from the car’s body—since they’re attached to the side of the vehicle’s A-pillar using hinges, they’re tricky to modify.
Lambo or scissor doors were made famous by Lamborghini. Most of the vertical door kits you see for sale aren’t butterfly doors—they’re Lambo doors! These only open vertically, so they’re a lot easier to install—simply bolt the hinge to the base of your car’s A-pillar.
With butterfly and Lambo doors, you’ve got to watch where you park. If you’re in a low-ceilinged space and you open the door, you could hit the ceiling since the door extends so high.
While Lamborghini made Lambo doors popular, these days, you’ll find the doors on almost any kind of car. Aftermarket kits are straightforward to install—you just replace the factory door hinge with the vertical door hinge.
That being said, some Mustang owners caution against replacing your doors with vertical doors. It can be a hassle to swap the hinges (you might need to remove the front bumper), passengers don’t know how to open the doors, and the Mustang can’t hold the weight of the doors when they’re vertical.
You may have also heard about swan doors or Astin doors. These were made famous by Astin Martin sports cars. While they look like normal hinged car doors when closed, they swing up and slightly outward when you open them so that they clear the curb. You can also find swan doors on Lagondas and even a few
Nissans
!
Finally, let’s talk suicide doors, which most manufacturers call rear hinge doors. These open from the rear hinges instead of the front ones, so it’s easier to access the rear seats. The
Lincoln Continental
first popularized the doors. Nowadays, you’ll spot them mainly on Rolls-Royce models.

What Mustang has butterfly doors?

Unfortunately, no Ford Mustang comes standard with butterfly doors. However, Ford produced the GT, a supercar with butterfly doors, from 2005 to 2006 and again from 2016 to 2022. With an MSRP of $500,000 and no more being produced, you’d have a hard time getting your hands on one of these!

Can you add butterfly doors to a Mustang?

You can modify your Mustang, but aftermarket kits allow you to install vertical Lambo doors, not butterfly doors. It’s tricky to install butterfly door hinges along the A-pillar of the car. Instead, it’s much simpler to swap out the factory hinges for vertical Lambo hinges on your Mustang—however, if you’ve got your heart set on butterfly doors, check out auto shops that specialize in them.
If Lambo (aka scissor doors) doors are okay with you, you’ve got choices. Shop around online for vertical door kits like the ones from
Vertical Doors, Inc
or
CARiD
. Both companies sell bolt-on hinge kits that will work with your Ford Mustang.
Plan on spending around $1,000 to $1,500 for a vertical door kit. If you don’t feel comfortable installing the doors yourself, factor in labor costs (which will vary based on your location).
Don’t forget that modifying your Ford Mustang might affect your warranty and raise your insurance rates. It’s a good idea to talk with your insurance provider to ask how mods affect your
Mustang insurance costs
.

How much does a Ford Mustang cost?

If you’re curious, the 2022 Ford GT (which comes standard with butterfly doors) starts at $500,000. This supercar isn’t for the faint of heart! It packs a 3.5-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder engine that puts out 660 horsepower with 550 lb-ft of torque.
The Ford Mustang is much more affordable—a 2022 Mustang has a starting MSRP of $27,400. Choose from a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine or a more powerful five-liter eight-cylinder engine. While neither Mustang competes with the GT in terms of raw power, the Mustang’s V8 engine offers 450 horsepower.
Save on Mustang costs by shopping for a used model. For instance, going with a 2020 model can save you around $2,000. Plus, used models are typically cheaper to insure
