The 2014 Mercedes E Class was a member of the fourth generation of Mercedes’s top-selling sedan series with a bonus—a facelift from the previous model year.
Nobody wants the old, tired version of a car—drivers want the best version they can get! Most models have yearly or bi-yearly facelifts to ensure each new model offers something a little more special than the previous year, from a new grille to a powerful powertrain upgrade. While not all facelifts are dramatic, the change from 2013 to 2014 was a big year for the Mercedes E Class.

Is the 2014 Mercedes E Class a redesign?

Yes, the 2014 Mercedes E Class saw a lot of improvements over the 2013 models, even though the interior didn’t change much. The biggest changes were made to its technology systems and engine performance.
While the gasoline engine remained unchanged, you’ll notice increased efficiency and performance if you opt for the diesel Bluetec engine. Other than some exterior updates and a few interior tweaks, plus some updated safety features, the 2013 or 2014 E Class models share many of the same qualities:
  • Optional 4Matic AWD
  • Multiple body styles—sedan, coupe, wagon, and convertible
  • Anti-lock brakes
  • Stability and traction control
  • Drowsy driver alert
  • Pre-collision automatic braking
But that’s enough about the similarities—what’s different?

2014 Mercedes E Class vs. 2013 Mercedes E Class: What changed?

Curious about the updates made for the 2014 model year? Let’s take a closer look at some of the new features added for the 2014 E Class.

A new diesel engine

The most anticipated upgrade had to be the replacement of the V6 E350 Bluetec diesel engine. Now, the diesel option offered by the E Class is a turbocharged 2.1-liter 4-cylinder E250 Bluetec engine that gets 195 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque
It also features much-improved fuel efficiency. In 2013, the Bluetec E350 got 22 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. In 2014, the Bluetec E250 got 28 mpg city and 42 mpg highway. That’s a huge improvement!

Styling

Another area where you’ll notice differences between the 2013 and 2014 models is the style. While the interior remained mostly unchanged (we’ll go over those differences in a moment), the exterior is where the E Class really saw an upgrade.
Gone is the boxy styling of the 2013 model year. The 2014 E Class models have sleek, streamlined noses and fenders that contribute to their aerodynamic and sporty look. The grille was significantly updated as well, going from a traditional hood ornament bearing the Mercedes emblem to embedding the emblem into the grille itself for a modern look.
The body of the 2014 E Class is perkier too, looking more sturdy than its predecessors—you could even say the 2014 model is cuter than older models with its snub nose. The headlights upgraded to a unilamp design from two lamps on either side as well. Redesigned fog lights completed the transformation.
On the interior, the E Class is mostly unchanged. You won’t notice any upgrades to the infotainment system’s setup, but the standard steering wheel has gone from four spokes to a sporty three. The three gauges in front of the driver have gone from ho-hum to visually alluring thanks to its three-tube upgrade—there’s also an additional Mercedes-branded analog clock on each 2014 E Class model.

Safety features

One major area of improvement for the 2014 E Class is in the available safety features.
While the E Class has always featured excellent safety features like anti-lock brakes and stability and traction control, the 2014 models introduce Intelligent Drive technology. Intelligent Drive is Mercedes’s attempt to make driving as safe as possible by offering an array of driver-assist features that help you keep your focus on the road.
One such feature is the newly-improved driver drowsiness monitor that can alert you when you’re too tired to keep driving. Mercedes’s system analyzes your driver habits to determine how you drive when you’re at your most attentive so it can alert you when your focus starts to drop. Mercedes hopes this technology will help to prevent crashes.
The 2014 model year also saw the introduction of a stereoscopic camera that is used in its updated lane-keeping assist technology. Other standard safety features include forward- and rear-collision mitigation systems and adaptive cruise control.

Pricing

The pricing for 2014 was updated as well. Since the E Class encompasses many models, we’ll look at a couple of examples from 2013 and 2014 to see how the pricing changed.

As you can see, despite the many changes and upgrades, the E Class saw only a modest price increase from 2013 to 2014. If you’re picking up a model today, you can get a great deal.

Should you buy a 2014 Mercedes E Class?

So, should you commit to a 2014 Mercedes E Class or hold out for the next redesign? It’s a big question to consider when thinking about vehicle upgrades.
The next major redesign for the Mercedes E Class came in 2017. If you’d prefer to buy a more recent model year, that’s the model year you should look for—but if you’re looking for a bargain on high style and great tech, the 2014 model is a good buy.
When you purchase a 2014 Mercedes E Class, you get to enjoy all the refreshed aspects of your car without paying extra for a more recent model year. The fuel economy isn’t improved in 2015 and 2016, so purchasing a more recent year before the 2017 major redesign won’t pay off much.
Clearly, 2014 was a great year for the Mercedes E Class. If you can live with slightly older technology but competitive safety features, it’s a great choice.
