The GMC Yukon and long-wheelbase Yukon XL are the largest GMC SUVs currently on the market. That being said, the Yukon and Yukon XL are more than gigantic—they are luxuriously outfitted and jam-packed with standard infotainment and driver assistance technology.
If you’re looking for an award-winning large GMC SUV, look no further than the Yukon and Yukon XL models. In addition to high-end trim offerings like the Denali, the Yukon XL can seat up to eight adult passengers comfortably, with room left to store a decent amount of luggage.

Meet the biggest GMC SUV: the Yukon XL

With a gross weight of 7,500 pounds and a maximum length of 225.2 inches, the
GMC Yukon XL
is the largest three-row SUV manufactured by GMC. It’s only 1.5 inches shorter than the largest SUV ever produced, the Ford Excursion.
Courtesy of the Yukon XL’s massive size, the SUV can seat a maximum of eight adult passengers comfortably—especially when equipped with the XL Denali’s hand-stitched leather upholstery. Not to mention the fact that the Yukon XL offers a maximum cargo capacity of 145 cubic feet with all of the rear seats stowed away.
When powered by a gusty 420-horsepower V8 engine and equipped with GMC’s Max Trailering Package, the Yukon XL can tow up to 8,400 pounds. It’s also capable of accelerating from zero to 60 miles per hour in as little as 6 seconds.
With a starting MSRP of $57,245, the Yukon XL is one of the most affordable giant SUVs on the market. Even better, it is equipped with the best of the best in standard driver assistance and infotainment technology.
Standard technology features on all trims of the Yukon and Yukon XL include GMC’s Infotainment Interface with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, as well as a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, and automated emergency braking with forward collision warning
Optional technology upgrades include built-in navigation, a Bose audio system, and driver assistance tech like blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist.

Engine and performance

A giant SUV deserves an equally massive engine to power it—and the GMC Yukon XL has three different powertrain options to choose from. The table outlines each in detail.

Cargo and towing

On top of being able to haul around seven of your best friends, the Yukon XL’s massive size allows it to carry plenty—and tow even more behind. Here’s a quick breakdown of the cargo capacity specs for the Yukon XL:
  • Cargo volume behind first row: 145 cubic feet
  • Cargo volume behind second row: 93.8 cubic feet
  • Cargo volume behind third row: 41.5 cubic feet
Compared to similar-sized SUVs from other auto brands, 41.5 cubes with all the seats in use is an incredible cargo capacity. That means that you can store plenty of luggage and other travel supplies in the trunk of your Yukon XL, even before you hook up a trailer to tow whatever else you need.
As mentioned, when equipped with its 6.2-liter V8 engine and GMC’s Max Trailering Package, the 2022 Yukon XL can tow up to 8,400 pounds without any problems. Even without the trailer package, the SUV can tow up to 8,100 pounds
That’s more than enough towing capacity for most drivers. To be sure, it is on par with similar giant SUVs like the Lincoln Navigator, which can haul up to 8,700 pounds

GMC Yukon XL vs. the competition

The Yukon XL might be the largest SUV on GMC’s roster, but how does it compare to other giant SUVs from rival carmakers? The table below compares the dimensions and other key specs for the Yukon XL and a few of its direct competitors.
Compared to the
Lincoln Navigator
,
Cadillac Escalade
, and
Jeep
Grand Wagoneer, the Yukon XL is longer, heavier, and more spacious on all counts. However, its powertrain is pretty much on par with these rival models.
Another bonus point for the Yukon XL? It’s notably cheaper than the competition.
