Jaguar was started as a British company but is now owned by the Indian company Tata Motors. Although the company has changed hands several times over the years, Jaguar is still based in Coventry, England and all Jaguar models are still made and manufactured in the United Kingdom.
The history of Jaguar is quite complicated. The brand was founded in 1922 as the Swallow Sidecar Company, originally making motorcycle sidecars before developing bodies for passenger cars.
Under the ownership of S. S. Cars Limited, the business extended to complete cars made in association with Standard Motor Co., many bearing Jaguar as a model name. The company’s name was officially changed to Jaguar in 1945.
In 1966, Jaguar merged with the British Motor Corporation, which merged with Leyland Motor Company two years later to become British Leyland. The company would be nationalized in 1975.
Then, in 1984, Jaguar spun off from British Leyland before it was acquired by Ford in 1990. Ford also bought Land Rover in 2000, and in 2008, sold both companies to Tata Motors. By 2013, Tata had merged Jaguar with Land Rover to create a single design, manufacture, sales company, and brand owner for both Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles.
