How to check your Jaguar’s VIN

There are 17 unique digits in your Jaguar VIN, or vehicle identification number, distinguishing it from other vehicles.
You can usually find this sequence on your Jaguar in the following locations:
  • In the windshield corner of the dashboard on the driver’s side
  • Stamped to the driver’s door jamb
  • Embossed in the vehicle frame by the engine
You can also locate it in your vehicle’s documentation, such as:
  • The registration
  • The insurance card and policy
  • The title

How to decode a Jaguar VIN

Though your Jaguar VIN functions like your vehicle’s ID when recording and filing documents at the DMV, each of its 17 digits is actually packed with information.
This is largely thanks to the standardization of vehicle codes by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 1981. While these codes had been in use in the United States since the 1950s, standardizing them helped make coded information uniform across production companies and country borders.
Today, all ten numerical digits (0-9) are used in VINs, along with all of the letters of the alphabet aside from I, O, and Q. These characters are omitted because of their similarity in appearance to the numbers 1, 0, and 9. Therefore, if you ever come across a digit of your Jaguar VIN and you’re unsure whether it’s a letter or a number, you can be safe in assuming it’s numerical.

First position: country of origin

The first three digits of every vehicle’s VIN form a sequence called the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) code. The vehicle’s country of origin starts this sequence off.
In Jaguar VINs, you will most typically see an S in this position—standing for Great Britain

Positions 2-3: manufacturer information

The second digit of your Jaguar VIN indicates who manufactured your vehicle. In most cases, this will be A for Jaguar
The third digit, combined with the first two digits, shows what division of Jaguar manufactured your vehicle and what type of vehicle you’re driving. For example, SAJ lets you know that you’re driving a Jaguar luxury sedan, whereas SAD can indicate a Jaguar SUV.

Positions 4-8: vehicle-specific information

The following five digits of your Jaguar VIN paint a portrait of your vehicle’s specifics. This will go through your Jaguar’s airbag system, transmission and steering, vehicle line and body type, and emission control system.

Position 9: the VIN check digit

In every VIN, the 9th digit is reserved for what’s called the “check digit.” This is a character produced by the manufacturer that is used to verify a VIN’s validity—because it is random in nature, it helps prevent people from creating fake VINs out of standard codes.

Position 10: model year

You can determine your model year in the 10th digit of your Jaguar VIN. Because new models are produced each year, however, over time some digits have been recycled.
To help clarify which digits can stand for which years, here’s a table of model year codes for the past couple decades:

Position 11: assembly plant

The 11th digit of your Jaguar VIN lets you know which plant assembled your vehicle.
Jaguar owners will most often see S or C for the Browns Lane Plant in Coventry, England.

Positions 12-17: vehicle serial number

The final six digits of your VIN make up your Jaguar’s individual serial code
Typically, this sequence is determined by production order. However, every manufacturer comes up with their serial numbers differently—so having a low serial number for your Jaguar doesn’t always mean it’s a first edition.
