Does Jaguar still make a station wagon?

Unfortunately, as of 2020, Jaguar no longer makes station wagons in the United States. But you can still find some of these luxury wagons on the road like the Jaguar X-Type Sportwagon and the
Jaguar XF Sportbrake
. Both of these vehicles only lasted a few years in the U.S. markets.

What’s the difference between a station wagon and a hatchback?

Many people often confuse a station wagon with a hatchback. While these cars look similar from behind, there’s quite a noticeable difference when you look elsewhere. Here are some of the more standout body styles of your typical station wagon:
  • A longer body than a sedan or hatchback
  • Prioritizes cargo volume
  • Extended passenger/cargo space
  • Typically includes a D-pillar
Unlike sedans, which are three-box vehicles with separate engines, passenger seating, and storage compartments, station wagons and hatchbacks follow a two-box design in which seating and storage are blended.
But once you start comparing storage capacity, the difference between the two becomes more obvious. Hatchbacks usually prioritize style before storage in that they are likely to have a gentler rear slope and a shorter body. While they can be stylish in their own right, station wagons tend toward a more boxy rear that often makes room for a third row of seating and more storage capacity.

The best Jaguar station wagons of all time

Now that we’ve explored what makes station wagons unique, let’s take a look at two you may—if you’re lucky—still find on the road here in the U.S.

Jaguar X-Type Sportwagon (2002–2009)

Starting Price: $2,983–$4,372
Passenger volume: 92.3 cubic feet
Cargo volume: 50 cubic feet
Engine: DOHC 24-valve V-6
Representing the first wagon for Jaguar, the X-Type Sportwagon made an initial splash with drivers before leaving the market in 2009.
Upscale, spacious, and sturdy, the X-Type Sportwagon is where luxury and performance meet. Drivers at the time could choose between a five-speed manual or automatic transmission, but today, you’ll have to take what you can get as these stylish wagons are a rarity on the roads.
But should you find yourself behind the wheel of the X-Type Sportwagon, you’ll be treated to all-wheel-drive and all the power that comes with a Jaguar engine: a 3.0-liter Duratec V-6 that makes 227 horsepower and 206 pound-feet of torque.
And what’s a station wagon without a plethora of safety features? The Sportwagon checks all the right boxes on safety. Plus, it comes equipped with all-season tires.

Jaguar XF Sportbrake (2018–2020)

Starting price: $45,000
Passenger volume: 100.3 cubic feet
Cargo volume: 69.7 cubic feet
Engine: Intercooled Turbo Premium Unleaded I-4
Lasting just three years in the United States, dealers were reportedly slashing off 20K from the XF Sportbrake’s asking price (which we factored in above). The XF Sportbrake, like the X-Type Sportwagon, has all-wheel-drive and graceful handling that outshines many in its class.
The luxurious Sportbrake may not be as practical as other wagons on the road, but when you're this stylish and sophisticated, you can get away with it.
Plus, as a newer model Jag, the XF Sportbrake offers a host of driver-assist features like
  • Available forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
  • Available blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
  • Available lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist

Are Jaguar station wagons reliable?

Jaguar’s station wagons score well across the board in terms of safety. But if you do find yourself in need of
car repairs
, expect to pay more for a luxury car like a Jaguar station wagon, especially since these vehicles are only available on the used market in the U.S.
But the good news is that the XF Sportbrake has not been subject to any recalls from the NHTSA and very few consumer complaints. Though when you include the entire brand, RepairPal gives Jaguar a rating of 2.5 out of 5, which makes it just “Average” for reliability.
What brings Jaguar’s reliability rankings down? We already hinted at this at the top. The answer: high repair costs. RepairPal estimates the annual repair and maintenance cost of a Jaguar to be around $1123.
The bottom line: if you want a rare luxury wagon with both style and performance, seek out a Jaguar for yourself—just be ready for higher repair costs.
