Are you legally required to have car insurance in Virginia?

I'm moving to Virginia and I need to buy a car for the first time for my new job there. I lived in the city and used public transportation and Uber before. My friend told me I don't need to worry about car insurance in Virginia. Is that true?

“Thanks for the question!
You aren’t legally required to purchase auto insurance in
Virginia
.
However, if you choose not to buy insurance, you’re required to pay what’s called an uninsured motorist fee of $500 per year.
This fee does not cover you if you end up in an accident. I recommend looking into
getting insurance in Virginia
for the financial security it offers you and other drivers should you get into an accident. If you are in an accident without insurance, you will be financially responsible for repairs and medical expenses.
