Why did my car insurance go up through Allstate?

I have Allstate car insurance, and I just saw that my rates went up. My friend told me to try Jerry and find cheaper insurance, but I wanted to ask if you guys could tell me what happened. Why did my car insurance go up through Allstate?

We’re so sorry to hear your rates increased with
Allstate
! There are lots of different reasons providers increase
car insurance
rates. We’ll list the most common causes here, and you can see if any of these issues might apply to you and your rates:
  • At-fault car accidents, or having multiple car accidents in a short period (even if you weren’t at fault for any of them)
  • Traffic tickets an insurance provider would see as risky or dangerous driving, like speeding tickets for instance, can raise your rates too
  • Did your credit score dip recently? Some insurance providers will adjust your rates based on credit scores, though they’re legally not allowed to consider credit scores when determining rates in California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, or Michigan
  • Have you made any late payments or asked for deferrals? Those will almost always make your rates increase too
  • Having any lapse in coverage, even a short one, will drive up car insurance prices
  • Rates increase as you get older, especially in your 60s and 70s, even with a perfect driving record
  • Did Allstate give you a telematics device to plug into your car? If so, they can adjust rates based on factors like mileage if you’ve surpassed certain thresholds
  • Local demographics and statistics affect rates as well. If your neighborhood has seen an uptick in car accidents, car thefts or break-ins, extreme weather events, etc., your insurance provider might increase your rates
We’re happy to hear your friend suggested you try the
Jerry
app. You should be able to find cheaper rates by switching to another provider. And many of those factors we listed above are reversible, so you might see those price hikes drop off down the road.
