Congratulations on finally selling your house! That has to be a good feeling. To cancel your homeowners insurance once your home sells, you’ll usually need to contact your local agent.
Sometimes you’ll be required to send a written request to cancel your policy. Different providers’ preferences will vary, though, so refer to your policy documents, check your provider’s website, or call customer service if you’re unsure how to proceed.
If you’re canceling before the end of your policy’s term, you might end up needing to pay a penalty or fee. You might also be able to get a refund for the rest of your unused premium.
Keep in mind that until you close on the home, it’s still your responsibility, so don’t cancel your policy too early! It’s usually best to wait to cancel until the closing date. If for some reason the closing date needs to be moved or the sale falls through, let your agent know as soon as possible.
