How do I read a car insurance policy?

I just got insurance for the first time and received my policy documents. I tried to look over them but I’m so confused. How can I better understand my auto insurance coverage?

“Reading your
car insurance
policy for the first time can certainly be overwhelming. However, once you know what you’re looking at, it is fairly simple to understand.
The
policy declaration page
contains all of your policy information, including:
  • Your name
  • Your address
  • Your vehicle
  • Your policy number
  • Your coverage dates or policy term
  • The type(s) of coverage on your policy
  • Any additional drivers
If you’re unsure of the coverage listed on your policy or what the numbers mean, you should reach out to your car insurance company to get the most accurate explanation of your specific policy.
Other important documents related to your policy are your ID card and terms and conditions form.
  • Your ID card is typically what police officers or other officials want to see when they request
    proof of insurance
. The terms and conditions form will detail any endorsements or add ons, coverage exclusions, and other details related to your policy, such as information about making payments or penalties for canceling early.
