How can I decide if a car insurance policy is right for me?
I recently moved away from home and am buying car insurance for the first time and have no idea what I’m doing. How do I know if I am purchasing the right policy?

Before purchasing a policy, you should familiarize yourself with the different
types of insurance
to determine the coverage you need and avoid expensive supplemental insurance like towing and labor coverage
if you do not need them. Additionally, you will want to have the following handy to help speed up the process:
- The vehicle’s VIN
- Your driver’s license
- The residential address where the vehicle will be kept
- Proof of prior insurance, like adeclaration pageif you are currently a driver under a different policy
- Additional documentation for discounts such as agood student discountor proof you completed a safe drivers course
It is also important to make sure you are meeting the
minimum car insurance required in your state
