Does AWD cost more to insure than other cars?

I've heard that getting an AWD car costs more to ensure than 2WD. Is this true?

“AWD cars may cost you more for
car insurance
than others, but it’s not the only factor.
Car insurance rates are based on risk. If you buy a Chevy Camaro with a V-8 and rear-wheel drive, you’ll probably pay more for insurance than a Toyota RAV4 with AWD.
As a general rule, it’s more about what type of car it is and what it has under the hood as opposed to its drivetrain. A car built for speed is always going to be more expensive to insure than a standard sedan or SUV.
If you’d like to compare costs, you can always get the VINs of vehicles you’re considering and request
car insurance quotes
from several companies. You can then compare the coverage and differences in cost for insuring each vehicle.
