I recently bought a used Hyundai Tucson and am having trouble figuring out how to access the gas tank to refuel—where do you open the gas tank in a Hyundai Tucson?

Opening your
Hyundai Tucson’s
gas tank—or more accurately, the fuel filler door—is simple, but the exact method largely depends on the vehicle model year. If your Tucson was built between 2004 and 2018, follow the instructions below:
  1. Make sure the doors are unlocked and the engine is switched off.
  2. Pull up on the fuel filler door release latch located on the front floor area of the left side of the driver’s seat. The lever is marked by a white fuel-pump icon.
  3. Upon pulling the release latch, the fuel filler door will automatically open part-way—exit your vehicle and pull the fuel door open the remainder.
  4. Unscrew the gas cap (it turns counterclockwise) and place the cap in the cap-holder attached to the inside of the fuel filler door.
If you own a Hyundai Tucson built between 2019 and 2023, you can open the gas tank using the steps below:
  1. Switch the engine off and ensure the driver’s side door is unlocked.
  2. Press in on the rear center edge of the fuel filler door—upon applying pressure, the fuel filler door will automatically unlatch and spring open part-way. Pull the door open further as needed.
  3. Unscrew the gas cap (it turns counterclockwise) and hang the cap tether on the hook attached to the inside of the fuel filler door.
With the gas cap removed, you’re all set to refuel—just make sure you know your Hyundai Tucson’s fuel tank capacity and fuel recommendations to avoid potentially damaging your vehicle.
When you’ve finished pumping gas, screw the gas cap back on (turning clockwise this time) until you hear an audible “click”—this signifies it is locked in place. Firmly shut the fuel filler door to latch it.
