The fastest charging method for the Volkswagen ID.4 is a public Level 3 DC fast charger. These can charge at speeds up to 150 kW, which means you could add as many as 89 miles of range to your ID.4 in just 10 minutes. If slow is more your speed, Level 1 charging can take nearly six days to fully charge an 82-kWh ID.4 battery.
Going electric means not having to worry about fuel-ups, but it also means you have to figure out how, when, and where you’re going to charge up. This could get a little nerve-racking, especially if you find yourself regularly driving for long stretches.
To help you deal with the charging anxiety you may feel with your new Volkswagen ID.4, we’ve put together a guide to let you know what to expect when it comes to charging times at each of the three options you have for your ID.4—Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3.
How long does a Volkswagen ID.4 take to charge?
Since it was introduced in 2021, the Volkswagen ID.4 has featured the same 82-kWh battery pack. For 2023, VW has added a smaller 60-kWh battery to go with its new base Standard ID.4 trim. That means there are two possible ranges when it comes to the length of time it’ll take you to charge your Volkswagen ID.4.
- 82-kWh battery (270-mile range): 40 minutes to 5.6 days
- 60-kWh battery (208-mile range): 25 minutes to 4.3 days
Smaller battery packs will take less time to charge, but charging time also depends heavily on the type of charger you’re using. It may be most convenient, for example, to use a standard household outlet, but that means you could be waiting nearly six days to reach a 100% charge. On the other hand, DC fast charging stations may be able to squeeze well over 100 miles of range into your ID.4’s battery in mere minutes, but regular use of these types of charging systems can wear out your battery more quickly than slower stations.

At-home charging speeds for a Volkswagen ID.4
Basic at-home charging involves just plugging your Volkswagen ID.4 into a standard three-prong household outlet. Your VW ID.4 will come with a 120-volt Level 1 charger. Unfortunately, while this may be the most convenient charging method, it’s also the slowest.
Level 1 charging will add about two miles of range per hour of charging time to your battery. So let’s say you’ve purchased a VW ID.4 Standard with 208 miles of range, and you’ve run it down to a 0% charge. If you plug it into your Level 1 charger, you’ll be looking at 104 hours to get it charged back to 100%. That’s 4.3 days!
You probably won’t want to leave your car plugged in for days at a time, so purchasing a Level 2 charger is your next best option. This type of
at-home electric car charger
allows you to plug your ID.4 into a 240-volt outlet—the type used for major appliances, like washers and dryers. This type of charger can add anywhere from 22 to 36 miles per hour of charging time. Taking the ID.4 Standard as our example again, VW reports that a Level 2 charger yields between 24 and 36 miles per charging hour for the 60-kWh battery. Charging speeds with higher-level chargers vary as your battery fills, so you’ll notice the fastest charging taking place when the battery is empty, and then things will slow down as it fills. VW estimates you’ll achieve a full charge in about 7.5 to 11.5 hours—far preferable to the days it will take with a Level 1!

Public charging speeds for a Volkswagen ID.4
Even though home charging is the most convenient method of charging your ID.4, it’s highly unlikely you’ll avoid needing to charge up while you’re on the go. That’s where public charging stations come into play.
For charging on the go, you have two options: public Level 2 charging stations and public DC fast charging (Level 3) stations. As you’ve probably guessed, charging times at a public Level 2 station will be comparable to the times you achieve at home. That means you can expect to add anywhere from 22 to 36 miles of range per hour of charging time. This is fine if you’re planning to spend several hours out of your car, but if you’re just trying to get further down the road, you need a much faster option—that’s where the Electrify America DC fast charging network comes in.
While your standard Level 1 or Level 2 chargers charge at a rate between 7.4 and 11 kW, a DC fast charger can reach charging speeds of 150 kW or higher. Of course, the speed of the charger is only part of the equation—how fast your car will charge also depends on how quickly your battery is able to take a charge.
Originally, the VW ID.4’s battery was only capable of DC fast charge speeds up to 125 kW, but upgrades following its original release now allow both the 60-kWh and the 82-kWh batteries to charge at speeds up to 135 kW.
So what does that mean for you in terms of charging time? Let’s take a look:

As you can see, Level 3 chargers are pretty fast, but don’t be fooled—once you move outside the 20% to 80% charge range, charging speeds slow significantly. While it may look like you could achieve a full charge in just 30 minutes at a Level 3 charger, it’ll actually take closer to an hour once you account for this lag, and it could take even longer if your battery is below 20% when you get started.
