The U.S. EV market is growing exponentially, attracting foreign automakers who hope to expand their businesses and provide new options for American shoppers.
VinFast is the new EV maker
to join the US auto industry by building a manufacturing plant in North Carolina.
Besides creating thousands of employment opportunities, the Asia-based company targets introducing its two EVs – the VF 8 and VF 9 – later in the year. The
electric cars
will be manufactured in Vietnam as the development of its new facility continues.
With some

VinFast reveals its plan to build an EV factory in North Carolina

VinFast, a Vietnamese startup, announced its plans to begin the construction of its first U.S. car manufacturing facility in North Carolina. According to the report posted on
Car and Driver
, the facility will be dedicated to manufacturing two VinFast EV crossovers – the VF 8 and VF 9. With this development, the automaker says it will create between 7,500 and 13,000 jobs.
The car factory will be located at the Triangle Innovation Point in Chatham County, NC, on a mega-site spanning over 2000 acres.
The first phase of construction – set to begin this year – will cost the company an estimated $2 billion with an initial production capacity of 150,000 units per year. On the flip side, its Haiphong, Vietnam-based facility will reach a production capacity of 950,000 units by 2026.
Before its EV initiative, VinFast produced vehicles with gas-powered BMW engines for its local market back home in 2019.
However, the car manufacturer's expansion into the U.S. targets the country's EV market by bringing the VF 8 and VF 9, previously named VF e38 and VF e36, respectively. The two models were designed by the renowned Italian transportation design institute Pininfarina.

How soon will VinFast start building EVs in the US?

Last year, VinFast established its head offices in Los Angeles, CA, indicating its motive to sell cars in the U.S.
Having begun construction of its mega car factory in North Carolina, the EV maker hopes to start manufacturing its crossover SUVs in July 2024 with a projected production volume of 150,000 units annually.
Considering that many American automakers have already established a niche in the electric vehicle space, VinFast's entry into the US market only implies that Americans will have new, foreign EV options and even see more cars from the Vietnamese car company. That's because the company will also build EV buses and batteries.

What to expect from VinFast VF 8 and VF 9 EV crossovers

VinFast unveiled the VF 8 and VF 9 at CES 2022, as noted on
MotorTrend
. Both cars have decent features that would rival the American competition. The midsized VF 8 will deliver 402 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque, enough power to take it from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds.
Nonetheless, the Vietnamese startup announced that a 201 hp single motor version would be the first of its range.
On the other hand, the full-size VF 9 will come with larger battery packs. Still, it will crank out the same power and torque output as the VF 8 and take one more second to zoom to 60 mph. The initial WLTP test covered 422 miles, 105.1 more than the VF 8.
According to VinFast, the cars will be steeped in driver assistance systems.
Both vehicles feature a modern design language that optimizes aerodynamics, including closed-off grilles and flat wheels, almost entirely covered.
Inside, you'll find a 15.6-inch infotainment system, color head-up display, synthetic leather heated seats, and optional cooling seats. The MSRP for the VF 8 and VF 9 is set at $41,000 and $56,000, respectively.
