Electric and hybrid cars have been increasing in popularity at a rapid pace, and no car brand wants to get left behind in the trend. In fact, car brands want to excel in the hybrid and electric space—and Toyota is doing just that.
U.S. News recently released a list of the best hybrid and electric cars for 2022 and Toyota came out on top, winning more awards than any other brand. The rankings take into account the overall U.S News scores, Level 2 charging rate, and fuel economy/range data from the EPA to find the winners.
Here Jerry, your favorite car ownership super app, looks at the highlights from Toyota and the list in general.

2022 Toyota Prius named best hybrid car

U.S. News named the Toyota Prius the overall best hybrid car of the year. This roomy hybrid vehicle seats five passengers comfortably, and has great cargo space for a car of its size. But, where the Toyota Prius really shines is with its fuel economy.
The Prius gets an unbelievable fuel economy of between 51 and 58 mpg in the city, and 47 to 53 mpg on the highway. With mpg ratings that high, drivers can cruise in the Prius for a long time before worrying about charging. A base model of the Prius starts around $25,000, so if you want a fuel-efficient car that’s great for everyday driving for a good value, this car might be your perfect match.

2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid named best hybrid SUV

Toyota was the only car brand that won more than one award, and its second number one spot is definitely well deserved. U.S. News named the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid the best hybrid SUV of the year. This hybrid SUV is another car with great fuel economy—41 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway, to be exact.
The RAV4 Hybrid is also a powerful car, with an engine that supports 219 hp. Not to mention, it has tons of safety features and a comfortable interior, making it a great car for families. The 2022 model of the RAV4 includes a new trim—the SE—and new, restyled headlights. This base model of this car comes in at a price point of less than $30,000 with standard all-wheel drive, which is a total steal.

What other cars made the list?

Besides the two Toyotas we’ve detailed here, U.S. News called out a few other car brands for their exceptional work in the hybrid and electric space. For starters, the 2022 Lucid Air won the award for best luxury electric car, and the 2022 Tesla Model Y was the best luxury electric SUV. These cost around $140,000 and $60,000, respectively.
Beyond luxury cars, the 2022 Kia EV6 was named the overall best electric vehicle. It has a jaw-dropping fuel economy range of 116 mpg to 136 mpg in the city, and 94 mpg to 101 mpg on the highway. This coupled with the car’s lively handling and comfortable interior earned it the top electric spot.
Last but not least, other cars named in the hybrid category along with the Toyotas included the 2022 Volvo S60 as the best luxury plug-in hybrid, the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid as the best plug-in hybrid car, and the 2022 Lexus ES as the best luxury hybrid.
