Tesla’s longest-running electric SUV, the
Model X
, has a starting cost that ranges from $122,440 to $140,440 for the 2022 model year. It offers up to 1,020 horsepower, more than 300 miles of battery range, and seating for five, six, or seven people.
These days, the name “Tesla” is practically synonymous with electric vehicles, and rightfully so. While sales of eco-friendly cars around the world have been steadily rising since the mid-2010s, Tesla sells more EVs than any other automaker (nearly one million units in 2021 alone). The Model X is Tesla’s biggest vehicle, and a great pick for car buyers who want a high-performance,
eco-friendly car
that can fit the whole family.

2022 Tesla Model X pricing information

With two trims available for the 2022 model year, the Tesla Model X has a starting cost of either $122,440 or $140,440
Those prices are based on two trims: the long-range Model X, and the performance-oriented Model X Plaid. Both trims offer more than 300 miles of driving range, but the Plaid’s tri-motor setup has a jaw-dropping 1,020 horsepower that can take it to 60 miles per hour in just 2.7 seconds
Unlike most automakers, Tesla keeps packages and upgrades to a minimum, but here are some add-ons that can increase the cost of a 2022 Tesla Model X:
  • 22-inch wheels ($5,500)
  • Interior layout with six seats ($6,500)
  • Interior layout with seven seats ($3,500)
  • Enhanced autopilot ($6,000): Automatic navigation, lane-changing, and parking
  • Full self-driving capability ($12,000): Includes all the same features as enhanced autopilot, plus traffic light and stop sign control.

What is the cheapest Tesla Model X?

The Tesla Model X doesn't come cheap, regardless of which trim level or options you choose. But if you’re looking for the most affordable version of this high-performance, luxury sport utility vehicle, the base Model X starts at $122,440
In addition to 351 miles of driving range and fast-charging capability, here are some of the Model X’s standard features:
  • Adaptive air suspension
  • Trailer hitch
  • Heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel
  • 17-inch touchscreen
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Wireless charging capability
  • Keyless entry and push-button start
  • Tri-zone climate control
  • Forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist
  • 22-speaker stereo

Is a Tesla Model X worth it?

In 2022, the Tesla Model X only has one competitor: the BMW IX. The IX’s $84,195 starting price makes it more affordable than the Model X, but it lacks some of Tesla’s best features. Not only is the Model X faster than the IX, but it also has more horsepower and better driving range, as well as cooler features — like falcon-wing doors and a yoke steering wheel.
That should give you an idea of where the Model X stands in terms of price, but you need to consider more than just cost to answer the question: is it worth it? Ultimately, the answer comes down to your preferences.
If you’re looking for a luxury SUV that’s as fast as a sports car, fully equipped with state-of-the-art autonomous driving technology, and offers more than 300 miles of driving range, the Model X has you covered. But if the idea of spending more than $100,000 on a car makes you nervous, then you might want to check out the BMW IX, or a smaller-but-less-expensive electric SUV like the Tesla Model Y or Audi Q4 e-tron.

What is the horsepower of a Tesla Model X?

While many people believe that electric cars forgo performance for the sake of environmental benefits, that couldn’t be farther from the truth when it comes to the Tesla Model X. The base model’s two electric motors produce a remarkable 670 horsepower and can move the car from 0 to 60 miles per hour in a mere 3.3 seconds
But for drivers looking for high-speed thrills, the Plaid trim is the true Model X powerhouse. It has three electric motors that make a whopping 1,020 horsepower and can hit 60 miles per hour in just 2.7 seconds. The Model X Plaid even outperforms some sports cars like the Ford Mustangand Chevrolet Camaro in professional drive tests.

What is the range of the Tesla Model X?

Despite its large size and high-performance powertrains, both versions of the Tesla Model X offer more than 300 miles of driving range per charge. Tesla says that the long-range Model X gets 351 miles and the Model X Plaid gets 335 miles, while the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Model X for 348 miles of range.

Is the Tesla Model X reliable?

Tesla might be one of the most popular electric-car manufacturers, but they’re far from the most reliable. According to J.D Power, Tesla has an average of 176 mechanical faults per 100 vehicles, putting it way over the industry average of just 121 faults per 100 vehicles. Tesla also came in second to last in Consumer Reports 2022 Auto Reliability Rankings.
That said, electric vehicles generally need less maintenance than gas-powered cars, simply because they have fewer moving parts. That could save you money in terms of repair costs, but Tesla’s low reliability rating might offset the advantages of owning an electric vehicle.
