The driving range of the 2022
Rivian R1S electric vehicle (EV) is 316 miles for both the Explore and Adventure SUV trim levels. A new name on the market, Rivian is an upstart electric vehicle manufacturer based in California. The R1S sport utility vehicle is only the second production model from Rivian; as such, some of the information on this up-and-coming EV has yet to be announced.
But fear not! Jerry

, has the answers. We’ve prepared this guide outlining everything there is to know about the Rivian R1S’s range, charging time, fuel efficiency, and more! 2022 Rivian R1S range
The 2022 Rivian R1S boast an impressive range of 316 miles. It is powered by a 128.9-kWh large battery and a quad-motor setup, generating 835 horsepower.
Expected to be Tesla’s next big competitor, Rivian takes aim at the Tesla Model X with its R1S. The two models are the only three-row all-electric SUVs on the market. The R1S is significantly more affordable than the pricey Model X, but compared to the Rivian’s 316-mile driving range, the Tesla Model X’s 333- to 351-mile range stands superior.
To put things into perspective, the Rivian R1S still ranks high in range against other competitors, like the 250 miles of the GMC Hummer EV. Considering that the average American commute is just 16 miles, the Rivian R1S could easily take you through your whole work week without needing to charge.

2022 Rivian R1S charging time and fuel economy
Besides driving range, you also need to consider charging time when looking for your next electric vehicle.
The Rivian R1S has various charging options, depending on which type of socket you use. Charging from a regular NEMA 5-15 socket takes around 111 hours to go from a dead battery to 100%. For something faster, use a NEMA 14-50 for a 26-hour charge.
If you’re stopping at a DC charging station, the R1S battery can handle up to 160 kW of power. Unfortunately, not all stations can generate such power. Your best chance for charging at home is with the Rivian Wall Charger, which can charge from almost empty to full overnight.
As for fuel economy, the 2022 Rivian R1S gets 69 MPGe.
How does the Rivian R1S compare to its competitors?
While the market for electric vehicles is still small, it is growing every day. Here’s how the R1S stacks up against the current competition: The R1S’s main competitors, from least to most expensive, are the Chevrolet Silverado
, the Tesla
Cybertruck, the Ford F-150 Lightning
, the GMC
Hummer EV, and the Tesla Model X. When it comes to speed, the Rivian R1S takes first place alongside the GMC Hummer EV. Both cars can go from 0 to 60 mph in an impressive 3 seconds. The Chevrolet Silverado has the best driving range, at 400 miles, with the R1S in third place at 316 miles.
Because the R1S is a new model, information is somewhat limited, and it hasn’t yet received an IIHS rating.
