SUV
with a starting MSRP of $85,000. This EV and its sister vehicle the Rivian R1T have made a big impression in the electric vehicle segment, and after reviewing the specs of these powerful EVs, it’s easy to see why.
Rivian is an EV startup that has garnered the attention of and investments from the likes of Ford and Amazon. The Rivian R1S is a boxy and sleek SUV that shares frame and format with the R1T pickup truck.
It resembles a Ford Flex, and it’s off-road-ready for all of your adventures. Of course, anyone interested in off-roading, camping, and the like is going to want to know just how much extra weight their SUV can handle—that’s where the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) comes in.
The experts at
Jerry
have broken down everything you need to know about the Rivian R1S’s GVWR, and what it means for this car’s hauling power.

What is GVWR and what is the Rivian R1S’ GVWR?

GVWR or gross vehicle mass (GVM) is a rating that describes the maximum operating weight on an electric car including curb weight (CW), accessories, equipment, all passengers, and cargo.
It’s an important rating to know whether you’re moving cross-country and towing a trailer or just loading up the car for a weekend camping trip. Knowing a car’s GVWR can help determine the payload capacity, or just how much additional weight your vehicle can hold or carry via trailer.
To find this number, you have to subtract the curb weight from the GVWR, and the difference is your payload capacity.
According to
evspecifications.com
, the Rivian R1S GVWR is 7,650.06 lbs. The curb weight is 5,842.25 lbs making the total payload capacity 1,807.79 lbs. This is great for the R1S, and exceeds the average for SUVs which is usually around 1,000 lbs.
