While it might seem a little premature, EV nerds (like me) are excited about the potential of this new platform to significantly improve cars of the future. Read on to find out why!
While some have switched to a dedicated EV platform, many carmakers are still using hybrid ones for their electric vehicles. This gives the manufacturer a lot of flexibility because the same chassis can be used for electric, hybrid, and regular gas-powered cars.
They work fine, but forcing an EV to exist within the confines of a “powertrain-agnostic” base does limit design choices.
Polestar’s new platform has been designed to support electric vehicles from the ground up, with none of the trade-offs that are needed to accommodate a combustion engine. The aluminum frame is much lighter than other platforms, which will make the Polestar 5 one of the most efficient EVs on the market.
It should also handle well, thanks to the rigidity you get from a fully integrated body and chassis.
Gear Patrol quotes an engineer at Polestar, who says, “We knew we wanted this car to be lightweight, we knew we wanted high quality, and we knew we wanted it quickly…This architecture delivers outstanding dynamic and safety attributes, with low investment technology applicable to high production volumes."
The Polestar 5 won’t be available for another couple of years, but all signs point towards it being one of the best electric cars on the market.
