Cadillac CT6 Plug-In Hybrid

The Cadillac CT6 Plug-In Hybrid was imported to the U.S. for the 2017 and 2018 model years, before being discontinued for the 2019 model year.
Perhaps this was because this PHEV couldn’t compete with other luxury options, as Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz began to offer their flag-ship vehicles in plug-in hybrid versions.
Still, the CT6 outperformed all of its competitors in terms of reliability, and still brings a lot to the table, making it a compelling purchase. Let’s take a look at the details.

The CT6 plug-in starts at $76,090 but comes in a monospec configuration, including a host of standard luxury equipment such as adaptive cruise control, a panoramic sunroof, and a rear-seat entertainment system.
While this is certainly a luxury sticker price, it’s approximately $14,000 cheaper than BMW’s 740e and a whopping $21,500 cheaper than the Mercedes-Benz S550e.

Performance and fuel economy

The CT6 PHEV trim level pairs the base CT6’s turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four with two electric motors housed in the transmission. An 18.4-kWh lithium-ion battery pack provides an EPA-rated 31 miles of electric-only range.
Altogether, the Cadillac’s drivetrain puts out 335 horsepower and 432 lb-ft of torque, allowing for a speedy 0 to 60 mph acceleration time of 5.2 seconds.
The battery system can be charged using a standard 120V or 240V rapid charger and will charge in approximately 4.5 hours using the higher voltage.  The vehicle is rated by the EPA for a combined driving range of 440 miles and a combined city/highway fuel economy rating of 62 MPGe.

Exterior styling

The CT6 PHEV offers exactly what you’d expect from just about any Cadillac—beautiful exterior styling that screams “elegance” and “class.” Despite behaving more like a sports car, this sedan evokes more town car and limousine vibes.
The 2018 model year was available in six jewel-toned colors:
  • Cocoa Bronze Metallic
  • Moonstone Metallic
  • Stellar Black Metallic
  • Crystal White Tricoat
  • Bronze Dune Metallic
  • Deep Amethyst Metallic

Interior and comfort

Most of the CT6 is a bit basic and unimaginative, but the dashboard includes wood, carbon fiber, and metal trim—as well as different types of leather, vinyl, and cloth—to create a unique aesthetic.
Like most sedans, there’s room for five people, although this Cadillac is a little bit smaller than most full-size luxury vehicles. Don’t worry—there’s still plenty of room for adults in the back seat, and it still feels more roomy than a mid-size sedan.

Cadillac doesn’t skimp on the technological options. The following features are standard across trims:
  • A 4G LTE data connection that powers a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Bluetooth
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone integration
  • Wireless phone charging
  • Three USB ports
The PHEV trim level also includes some extra tech-based features, like navigation. You can also choose to add on the relatively expensive 34-speaker Bose Panaray audio system if you’re an absolute music lover.

Warranty coverage

Like many luxury car brands, Cadillac's warranty provides bumper-to-bumper coverage for four years/50,000 miles, whichever comes first. The Cadillac powertrain warranty beats out those of its competitors—Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz—at six years/70,000 miles

Trim levels and options

The 2018 Cadillac CT6 is available in the following trim levels:
  • Base: $55,090
  • Luxury: $60,190
  • Premium Luxury: $66,290
  • Plug-In Hybrid: $76,090
  • Platinum: $85,290
As you can see, the PHEV version of the vehicle is only available as a single trim and includes all of the luxury add-ons as the Luxury and Premium Luxury options—but not quite as much as the Platinum version.
Included features are Bluetooth connectivity, a 10-speaker Bose audio system, dual-zone climate, heated and ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, a rearview camera, a head-up display, as well as some driver-assistance features like Adaptive Cruise Control, Night Vision, and forward and reverse automatic braking

The bottom line

If you invest in the 2017 or 2018 Cadillac CT6 Plug-In Hybrid, you’ll get exactly what you expect from a Cadillac sedan—plus the added fuel economy value.
Overall, we’re impressed by the CT6’s affordability, especially in comparison to similar PHEVs from other luxury brands. However, since the vehicle was manufactured in China and imported for just two years, it may be a little bit more difficult to get your hands on it.

2018 Cadillac CT6 Plug-In Hybrid vs. 2018 BMW 740e

As a luxury PHEV, the Cadillac has few competitors—but the
740e is a worthy adversary, especially since it serves as the brand’s flagship vehicle. With a starting price of $90,700, it’s certainly a splurge—but it’s quite impressive.
Let’s take a look at how the two vehicles compare:

2018 Cadillac CT6 Plug-In Hybrid vs. 2017 Mercedes-Benz S550e

While the
S550e was discontinued after the 2017 model year, it’s still a worthy competitor to the CT6. It’ll cost you a pretty penny, however—it’s the most expensive car on our list.
