While
electric vehicle
manufacturers and legislators alike are interested in getting everyday consumers to adopt EVs, there has also been a push for more electrified vehicles for
public transit and delivery fleets
, first-responders, and other occupational uses.
In response to this demand for more EVs, Ford has released the first-ever electric pickup truck for police use, the F-150 Lightning Pro SSV (Special Service Vehicle). Keep reading to learn more about the SSV with the car ownership experts at Jerry.

Why make an electric truck for police use?

Over the years, many different models of vehicles have become synonymous with police cars.
More and more, however, individual police departments have been doing away with full-size sedans like the Crown Vic or Dodge Charger in favor of more utilitarian SUVs and trucks such as the Dodge Durango, Chevrolet Tahoe, or Ram 1500.
Using larger, more powerful vehicles, however, is of course going to result in higher gas expenses.
According to Ford as reported by
Car and Driver
, the company claims that incorporating more electric models will not only make police departments greener but will help cut costs as well.

All about the F-150 Lightning Pro SSV

The SSV version of the Lightning doesn’t stray too much from the highly sought-after Ford Lightning EV, but there are a few notable differences.
Performance numbers
are the same across both lineups, but the SSV will come equipped with police-grade heavy-duty cloth seats as well as roof-mounted LED warning lights and steel intrusion plates in the front seatbacks.
Just like the standard F-150 Lightning, the SSV will also sport
Pro Power Onboard
, a feature that turns the electric pickup truck into a mobile generator.
Ford has yet to release pricing information or a timeline as to when these vehicles might start showing up at police departments, but the brand does intend to offer municipal loan programs to fund the purchase, installation, and operation of charging stations at police departments.

How to save money on an F-150 Lightning

There are no numbers yet about how many police departments will be interested in the SSV, but If the
160,000 reservations
of F-150 Lightning EVs are any indication, this electrified service truck could be very popular.
