Where to find electric vehicle charging stations in Washington

When looking for an EV charging location to use, you’re going to want to be aware of the type of charging equipment that’s available there. Here are the main types of chargers you’ll find at an average station.
  • Level 1: 120 volts (same as a regular household outlet); best for plug-in hybrids; approximately 24 hours to charge an EV
  • Level 2: 220 volts; can be installed in your home; usually takes 4 to 8 hours to charge
  • Level 3: Also called DC fast charging; the type of charger you’ll find along highways/at gas stations; chargers up to 20 miles/minute
  • Tesla Supercharger: Tesla’s common DC fast chargers; higher average plugs per site
You’ll mostly find Level 2 and Level 3 chargers in Washington. About half of the DCFC charging stations in Washington state are Tesla Superchargers. However, there are level 1 stations at many of the Washington airports and Park and Ride locations. They’re also commonly found at food stores and supermarkets.

How much does it cost to charge an electric car in Washington?

Electricity in Washington costs about 9.92 cents per kilowatt-hour. Based on this figure, you should be able to fully charge a Tesla Model 3 for just over four dollars. In fact, Washington has been named one of the best states in the country to own an EV, thanks in part to its low electricity costs.
However, you can expect to pay more if you’re charging at a public station. Depending on where you are, what time of day you’re charging, which type of charger you’re using, and what company owns the charging station, prices will vary.
Level 2 chargers will cost between 20 to 30 cents per kilowatt-hour, while you’re likely to pay anywhere from 30 to 45 cents per kilowatt-hour at a level 3 DC fast charger.
The reason a DCFC costs more is simply that it’s a more efficient way to charge—it’ll take significantly less time. Of course, there are “free” chargers all over the state—many of them will require you to pay a membership fee or pay for parking.

Washington electric vehicle incentives

Washington state—along with the federal government—is investing significant money to electrify roadways over the coming years. Part of this investment contributes to electric vehicle purchases with tax incentives.
You can receive up to$7,500 in federal tax credit as well as up to $1,300 in Washington state EV tax exemptions for purchasing an electric car. The purchase and installation of EV infrastructure—such as a home charging station—is also tax-exempt here.

How to save on electric car insurance in Washington

Driving an electric car in Washington is a fantastic way to save money on fuel costs, but there are some downsides. Specifically, most EVs cost more than their gas-powered counterparts. Higher purchase prices as well as valuable, scarce EV components and battery materials, translate to expensive
car insurance for green vehicles
.
For instance, Tesla Model 3 insurance costs an average of about $3,200 annually. Washington’s most popular car, the
Honda Accord
, only costs an average of about $1,400 to insure.
You also need to consider the fact that average
