What do we know about Acura’s first electric car?

Here’s what we know about Acura’s upcoming EV so far. Honda has indicated the EV will be a large SUV featuring GM’s Ultium Lithium-ion batteries and Ultium Drive electric motors. Dual-motor AWD is expected to be an option for consumers with additional battery pack options coming in between 70 kWh and 100 kWh, providing around 300 miles of range.

There are also rumors that Acura’s EV will aim to compete with Tesla’s

Model Y

—what that means for design and performance specs, we can only speculate.

How to decide if going electric is right for you

Electric cars may be the way of the future, but in the here and now, it’s not always convenient to jump on the EV train. If you’re holding out for Acura’s new EV, here are a few questions to consider:

Do you have access to public charging stations? You’ll most likely have a home charging station for your EV, but if you need to charge on the go, it’s worth knowing where the nearest public charging stations are.

How many miles do you drive each day? Driving range can put a damper on your driving plans if you consistently make trips over the maximum. With a 300-mile maximum expected for Acura’s first EV, it’s important to be cognizant of your daily commute distances.

How often do you go on trips over 200-300 miles? Again, charging your EV will be a major consideration if you make trips over 200 miles on a regular basis.

Do you have a garage at home? Your home charging station will need to be in a sheltered and secure area. Unfortunately, street parking isn’t an option for your EV when you’re at home.

Do you need a vehicle with towing capacity? Although we’re not sure what Acura’s EV will be able to tow, it’s likely not going to be much. If towing capacity is important to you, you may want to consider a different EV or hybrid.

Still, there are tons of benefits that come with buying an electric vehicle—a $7,500 federal tax credit, for one thing! You may also qualify for extra rebates and incentives from local and state governments and power companies. Your EV will come with lower operating costs and provide fun and quiet driving—plus, your daily commute will have less of an impact on the environment!

Acura’s electric future

Acura’s parent company, Honda, announced that it plans to phase out internal-combustion engines in its lineup by 2040—a policy that will most likely affect Acura’s future output as well. Acura has also said that it will skip over hybrid production in favor of adding more electric vehicles to its lineup.

Acura’s first electric vehicle will be released to North American consumers sometime in 2024, with an expected 300,000 selling in the first year.
